How do you deal with people who go on rants?

I know a couple people that once they get started on a subject, will not stfu for a good 5 mins or so. I want to shoot myself.

How do I get out of it?

You know what really grinds my gears? Going on rants. Yeah, I said it. Going on rants about anything and everything under the sun, like it's some sort of therapy session for the soul. But let me tell you, it's more like a festering wound that just won't heal.

First of all, let's talk about the sheer energy it takes to go on a rant. I mean, seriously, who has the time and the stamina for that? You're sitting there, steam pouring out of your ears, words spewing out of your mouth like a malfunctioning fire hydrant, and for what? To express your frustrations? To vent your anger? Sure, it might feel good in the moment, but at what cost? Your sanity? Your credibility? Your relationships?

And let's not forget about the audience. Oh yes, there's always an audience for a good rant, isn't there? Whether it's your friends, your family, or some poor unsuspecting soul who happened to stumble into your crosshairs, they're forced to endure your verbal onslaught whether they like it or not. And what do they get out of it? A front-row seat to the circus of your mind? Congratulations, you've just turned them into unwilling spectators of your personal drama.

But perhaps the most infuriating thing about going on a rant is the aftermath. Once the dust settles and the adrenaline wears off, what are you left with? Regret. Remorse. Embarrassment. Because let's face it, nobody looks back on a rant and thinks, "Wow, I really handled that with grace and poise." No, more often than not, you're left cringing at the memory of your own unchecked emotions running wild like a pack of rabid dogs.

So the next time you feel the urge to go on a rant, just remember this: Stop. Take a deep breath. Count to ten. And for the love of all that is holy, keep your mouth shut. Trust me, your sanity—and your relationships—will thank you for it.

Most people rant about 1st world problems. "Why is the copier out of toner?!", "Traffic was sooo bad this morning"

Excuse yourself to the toilet, or pretend to have a phone call come in, make up a story about having to be somewhere, just whatever you need to do to get out of the situation. Eventually you can politely tell them it's not how conversations are meant to work; you're not an emotional tampon bin, you're a person with their own beliefs and things to offer a conversation.

I deal with this all the time with a tranny that I know. I'm on the verge of telling her to STFU because I hate how she rambles for minutes on end and only ever talks about herself:

Every time we have a conversation, with barely even a word out of my mouth she instantly talks obsessively about herself, her day and her own rather narrow and obscure interests. She launches into lengthy monologues on end about whatever is bothering her at the moment, and will talk for minutes on end without me able to get a word in edgewise. Usually it's about her friends, her past life and past jobs that she hated, or her own obsessive interests and hobbies such as fountain pens or English literature.

I manage to feign social graces initially just for the sake of appearances, but this persists even when it is manifestly obvious I have zoned out out of the conversation. She will just keep talking on end about pens, literature, British T.V shows utterly oblivious to my lack of interest or participation in the conversation.

She never takes an interest in me or the things I like, and there are even times I intentionally steer the conversation away from her own self-obsessed monologues, and she will interrupt me literally mid-sentence and veer the conversation back to herself and these narrow topics of interest like a moth around a porch light. Sometimes even without a hint of segue; she will just pick the topic back up as an utter non-sequitur.

Needless to say I find this depressing and frustrating, and am on the verge to telling to STFU and GTFO out of my life. Though I may try to salvage this if I can devise a strategy and figure out what the problem is. Is it some mental issue from what I've described? A major narcissist? OCD? Self-esteem issues? Bad social skills?

Help appreciated.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

I know some people do that...especially on the internet....and they are doing it for their personal thing....they just expect you to be a good listener...best is not to indulge when they start talking about personal things...

A total waste of time and you won't change anyone's mind.
