Is SHOGUN the best show on TV?

Super high production value, every shot looks like film cinematography. Better visuals than great HBO stuff like S1 westworld and game of the thrones.

Ridiculously good writing. Granted it was written by a man a long time ago. But very faithful to its source material. No surprise dingers, only 1 mary sue but she fit the part as a highly skilled ninja-to.

Epic fighting and killing, decent love story, lots of honorable warriors. You end up rooting for people you didn't even think you would like. 10/10. Better than Reacher, Terminal list. Even beats Game of Thrones due to gritty realistic fighting, no Mary Sue Arya or stupid Brianne of Barf or Sand Snake or stupid queen of dragons.

Where Are the Black People in Shogun?

It came out three years after Roots and, to many Americans, was their introduction to the history of Japan, though presented from a European viewpoint. 1980 Shogun, starring Richard Chamberlain, also reinforced the white savior trope, far too common in film, television, and history books.

The 2024 version focuses far more on the Japanese perspective. The white characters appearing in the first episodes representing Portugal, Spain, England, and Holland could hardly be deemed heroic.


I ask the question now that I naively didn’t ask in 1980. Where are the Black people?

It's the end of the Sengoku period. The Edo period begins after the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The show is good, but a bit boring. I prefer the Richard Chamberlain one srs

I was just thinking how this show is similar to GoT but better. One of its redeeming qualities is that it's not woke (GTFO with this black ppl in japan chit.) Watch it on hulu for a nipple here and there
