My whole life, Republican = right = conservative. And Democrat = left = liberal.

The Republicans aren't any more liberal than they have ever been. But now the Democrats/left have become even more illiberal than the Republicans/right.

Go back to 1970 and tell the hippy left that in 50 years, their party would be advocating for compelled speech, censorship, and penalties for wrongthink. They'd all tell you that was impossible.

Did the whole left manage to leapfrog the other party in their hate for personal freedom, or are people just to dense to see what happened?

I'd consider myself centrist more than anything, but the left has gone SO far left that being in the centre means you're on the right even if you're not a full MAGA type.

Each party moved more left and more right as their leadership battled it out on TV, Am radio, and cable tv.

Most of what people think of as "Republican" or "Democrat" is distorted by the funhouse mirror of social media.

There's a 5% minority on either side but my neighbors and coworkers are sane and I'd wager the average person is as well. This goes for those who vote Dem and Republican.
