Consistent with the development of some sort of mental illness, or the guy was previously diagnosed and went off his medication. I have a decent amount of work experience with high acuity psychiatric patients, and this behavior is not uncommon. Likely some sort of bipolar, psychosis, or schizophrenia, or maybe a combination.
