Houston Mayor John Whitmire says city is 'broke' after decades of overspending that has stopped them from being able to pay firefighters

Tax hikes and increased fees for parking and city services are likely

John Whitmire, who was elected in December, gave the bleak warning at a City Hill meeting this week where he proposed a five percent cut across all city spending to alleviate the cash-flow problem.

'I think we can all agree that we're broke,' Whitmire said, before proposing the planned cuts.

'This gives us a chance to discuss the financial picture of this City. It is broken! It was broken when I got here, ' he said.

Both parties overspend. I think the one difference between Rep and Dems are that republicans tend to put that money towards businesses and things that help business grow, and while many criticise that they are funneling money to the rich, the economic outcome is that there is more wealth and it seems there is a high return on that money. Democrats like to spend money on programs that don't actually have any real return such as parks and improving the hood while enriching public sector workers. As well, democrats tend to make things go up in price and that's why although blue areas tend to have more money flowing around, things are so much more expensive it reverses the outcome.
