PS5 Pro Dev - "I didn’t meet a single person that understood the point of it"

Shortly after returning from GDC, GamesIndustry.biz editor Christopher Dring appeared in a podcast, in which he claimed that when speaking to developers, ‘I’ll be honest, I didn’t meet a single person that understood the point of it.’

‘Developers didn’t seem to feel they needed it’, he said. ‘They weren’t really making the most of the PS5 in the first place,’ he added.

Considering how obsessed publishers have become with growth recently, Dring also added that, ‘A couple of companies said: ‘This isn’t going to grow the market. This isn’t going to move the needle.’

‘This generation doesn’t even seem to have got started, let alone needs a mid-generation upgrade,’ he concluded.

Exactly what I've been saying all along. What is the point of this? We just got out of the cross-gen period and we're only just starting to get drip-fed current gen only PS5 games. Dev's have barely worked on optimizing and utilizing the PS5's capabilities, but sony wants to go ahead and release an entirely new sku for no reason other than just to make some extra bucks.

day one for ps5 pro.

They should just open consoles up to be poor mans PCs. Have an APU card you can just drop in the system and replace every 2 years.

Yoo this is crazy. I swear just today I was thinking what if instead of making a second PS5 that tries to appeal to all devs and customers.. What if they made one that targets only 15-20% of their customers who would want a more powerful model of the existing console. It's a wild idea but this may cater to those who:

1. Might think of switching to PC now as it becomes much more powerful than existing consoles with the 5x series of GPUs and beyond.

2. Realize that instead of praying every night and protesting at dev headquarters for them to change their philosophy on game optimization, a safer bet would be to just buy better hardware.

Though I know devs are just being silly and would start optimizing games if we simply asked them to. I still think it's a good idea.

Make sense, they've hardly gotten the most out of current gen consoles as it is and are still releasing most games cross-gen.

Their last cross gen game was Ragnarok (2022). If every game this gen looked and performed like Ragnarok or Demon's Souls Remake I think everyone would be doing cartwheels on PS5 Pro's grave. Problem is that most 3rd party devs can't live up to those standards..

As much as you dislike Playstation 1st party games when it comes to story and gameplay even you gotta admit they absolutely kill it in terms of presentation.

Yeah I'm sure Sony themselves could make good use of a pro with some exclusive game of theirs, but then again they have really slowed down when it comes to that to the point where I'd have to ask how many games could possibly justify it. Like you said, 3'rd party devs aren't exactly getting the most out of what we already have, and that's about 99% of what I play on my PS5 outside of GT7.

Fair enough. Not gonna deny most of what you said here, PS5 1st party output has been poverty this gen but I don't think that's why the enthusiast would want the pro.

Like I said before: gameplay and story aside, if all devs had the presentation of Sony 1st party we would be golden right now.

I think the pro is more for third party games. Can't count on most devs to focus on optimization so instead of being like @bongo and hosting holy prayers and rituals for devs to change their ways, it's far easier for me to get tangible results by buying better hardware.

True, especially given how they seem to even struggle at making games run well on high end PC's these days.

I've seen a lot of this, and we saw a lot of this around the PS4Pro. Because people will buy it and Sony exists to make money, it's really not a hard concept, stupid dev.
