My dad died two weeks ago. Today was his funeral.
I got a knock on the door two weeks ago and it was a police officer. He told me that my dad was found about 5-10 minutes from my house (40 minutes from his) on the side of a street. We still don't know the cause of death, but the funeral home director thinks it was a heart attack. Apparently my dad pulled off to the side of this random street, I'm guessing because he wasn't feeling well, then opened the door of his car and immediately collapsed onto the ground (it apparently looked like he fell out of the car as soon as he opened the door). He also vomited, which is what made the funeral home director think it was a heart attack. And since my dad was laying there for 2 days before he was found, the vomit eroded some of his face. It's just horrible. My dad was a good man and a incredible father. He didn't deserve to die like that--alone, probably scared, probably confused, and laying there for 48+ hours on the side of the road. It haunts me.
It's been devastating. I'm 34 and my dad was 85. He had me very late, but damn if he wasn't the best dad a guy could have. He absolutely loved me to death, and I did him; he was my best friend. I lived with him for pretty much 30 years of my life, and I used to be embarrassed by that, but now I'm glad I did because I can cherish those memories. We did almost everything together and I just can't believe he's gone. I have pictures and videos, thank God, but the realization that I'll never get to see him or hear his voice in person, or give him a hug, or tell him I love him ever again is beyond agonizing.
Don't take moments with your loved ones for granted. I know this isn't new advice, but trust me, this hits hard after someone you love dies. You end up regretting everything you think you could've done "better". You end up wishing you could've been more present in every moment you had with them. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to really realize this until they're gone. Please make sure you cherish every moment with the people you love. It won't be forever.

My condolences.
RIP to your father.
RIP to your father.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Sorry for your loss OP , your dad sounds like a stand up guy . When I was 22 I got a call from the office that my dad had passed , later found out he suicided himself .
He was a great father , but had issues with alcohol unfortunately. Crazy thing is I found out later he was sober when he pulled the trigger . But he had lost everything due to drinking , and I was unemployed and working for free with a guy who had an impaired charge( free room and board) , so I had no money to help him at the time .
I certainly feel jealous when I see friends having their parents come to visit . Sucks not having parents tbh

But let me tell you one thing, don't feel bad for him or the way he died. The guy was 85, he had a son who seems happy and sounds like his son loved him back, he got to see his son reach mid 30s. The ultimate success in life. He died a happy man, and it was probably pretty quick, much better than some slow deaths. He got to have kids and see them grow old, the guy should be happy laughing in whatever after life there may be now. He made it. He wasn't alone brah, I'm betting he had a full heart.
Also, you're alive through him. Your brain is a copy of his.

Condolences for your loss. My dad is in a care home with cognitive decline. It's probably a different experience as you come to terms with the fact that he's on the home stretch.

I wish I had a dad like yours dude. I called mine about my cat who he knows was extra special and he told me it was midnight and hung up the phone. He was always a son of a b****. I'm glad you had a good one. Cherish that a lot of guys do not have good dads.
