Misc Aquarium/fish experts-is my 2 year old Betta fish dying or lazy?

I moved him from a 10 gallon to a 20 because just LOL at your fish not living in a mansion. The problem is, since the move he just eats and sits on the ground to bert stare me.



It’s been a few days now, water parameters seem right.

Looks like the current is too strong. They are weak swimmers. They don't even need a filter or pump. Turn it off for the time being .

They like to just float around or lay on plants and such.

Sometimes when they are full and totally bloated they will lay on the surface sideways and chill.

Those fish are hardy.

Edit looks like it has laboring breathing. Turn off all the pumps/filters

My betta never flared at me. Guessing if I put another male betta they would fight

Gjdm on 20 gallon for the betta.

I would say that's normal behavior. Not all bettas have the same personality just like dogs

You thinking about adding a few dwarf frogs or shrimp or khuli loaches? You could do a lot with 20 gallons

I left my betta by himself in a 20 gallon cause I simply didn't get around to getting tank mates

2 years is old age for a betta.

I placed a makeshift baffle on it for now, I have a real one coming soon. Once in a while he gets up to tell me to fuk off and stop looking at him, so that’s good. I’ll see if I can do more to reduce water flow. Thanks!

I’ve had 100+ bettas in my lifetime. With males they have different personalities it depends on yours. Many I have seen it said that if he’s on the substrate curled up then water temp could be off. 78degrees ideal. But I have found it’s just a personality thing. I have had male bettas zip around, go from laying in one corner then back and forth into another one and lay down there for awhile. Some bettas that were healthy have even stood downward on their heads in one spot. One in particular loved to face plant in the substrate. They mostly all have in common they’re slower moving, sedate fish.

Put a mirror in front of him see if he acts up and flares his gills .

Try feeding frozen bloodworms it’s s favorite a healthy one not under stress should go nuts for ime.

Yeah, I’m hoping it’s just cranky boomer betta behavior. I thought about frogs but my tank is too tall for them, it’s one of those 20 gallon tanks without the frame (not quite 20 tall though). He goes up and down fine, but i think frogs would struggle. My kids wanted me to get a couple of corys, so that happened.

Oh yeah, the mirror pissed him off. Okay I’ll relax on this for a while.

I was going to say a gold apple snail or nerite is the perfect tank
Mate for a single betta you can add if there’s a lid to keep him from
Crawling over the glass. I can’t tell. It’s definitely an above recommended space. 15 gallons more than the minimum size for a male betta.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine so just throwing it out there. Don’t ever put a beta in a tiny bowl because you think it’s fine. It’s not. Drives me nuts that pet stores are allowed to put them in tiny cups.

Good job for at least giving it a proper tank.

It’s supposed to be a marketing strategy like those puppies in cages that are from puppy mills. “Look at the poor thing, I’ll save it from it’s cup and put it in a proper bigger cup.”

Sadly it works for pet stores.

That video you posted looks like he is really struggling with the current lol.

Dude is fighting it way too hard.

Don't stick a mirror in front of him. It's just gonna stress him out. Turn it off for a couple of days. Trust me.

Off topic to the op and sry to derail but really contemplating mastering growing aquarium plants and totally disregard adding any fish for a bit. Would have to add ammonia for the plants cause it will not have fish poo, My planted tank looked kinda nice but I think they died cause I didn't add the right minerals to the water

Do it. Getting the plants part down was always a struggle for me, but its the first step towards “aquascaping” and making those surreal aquariums like Takashi Amano used to make.







Edit: I forgot the advice part. All I’ve noted is that lighting is a big thing. The right timing and the right type. Getting it on a timer would probably be helpful.

Add co2. Seriously. I tried several times and most recently I added co2 and holy crap the plants grow. I had to trim so often I was throwing out plants every few weeks.

Good tip but I had c02 in my last and only planted tank. Issue that caused plants to die I'm guessing the water ha d been depleted of its minerals

For what it’s worth, NY tap water is much better than water in NJ. I lost some adult, hardy cichlids (Texas, Buttikoferi, and even a red devil when I attempted to use NJ tap water with normal dosing of prime/de-chlorinaters. I learned our water quality is total chit here. I adjusted them as slowly as I could, but they all died in a week, after years in NY.

Takashi Amano was one of my influences when I was into planted aquaria. no I rarely use plants except if floating. I am a Central American/South American cichlid guy. Never say never but the chances of me doing a densely planted biotope are pretty slim. Especially since I don’t have the space.

I haven’t kept shrimp for a while, but I recall them often getting caught in filter intake
areas. One thing that helped me out with this was putting a sponge on the intake




Reduced flow and all of that, but kept them safe.

Yes I have one of those bad boys already fitted, bonus is they eat all the algae that builds up on the sponge. What flavor shrimp did you have? i have a couple of jades, blue dreams, a few ghost shrimp and cherries. Hoping to get them to breed. On spread

I use a sponge over every intake now. Those bad boys are a game changer.
