The soil is so good here we could just eat it with out the need for raising a plant in it first.

You can make "bad soil" good. through three ways:

1. Buy fresh fish from the store (preferably the whole fish) chop it into 1/3rds and bury it deep in the soil where you want to start your garden. Then, plant the fruits/vegetables you want to grow on top of the buried fish. It will grow fast and huge. People don't often use this method because dogs/raccoons/coyotes can smell the decomposition and try to dig it up so you have to cover that area of the garden with chicken wire. Its basically the strategy farmers use when they grow those "world biggest pumpkins" at county fairs and whatnot. You can use the waste of other fruits and veggies (banana peels/mango skins etc) but it doesn't work as well as fish.

2. During the winter if you were burning wood for a fire, dump the ashes into the garden.

3. Just go to a feed store and buy 50lb bags of horse/cow/chicken manure which will do the trick too.

Enjoy the Midwest. Bugs, cold winters, wind, boring, etc. But that black soil and no rocks is amazing.

Where do you think most agriculture is done in the USA? Probably where the ground is fertile and the soil is nice.

The Midwest is pretty GOAT, but you have to avoid the sandy soil areas if you want good dirt. I have yet to see a single earth worm in Texas, which is a pretty good indicator of what sort of soil we’ve got here
