Construction workers union pushing for AUD$240,000 entry wage
Yes , you read that right -
entry wage
“Tradies on a $6.3 billion construction project are walking off the job as their union calls for pay rises which would see an entry-level worker earn an eye-watering $240,000 per year.”
This is Brisbane by the way, where cost of living is much lower than Sydney

Remember: United you bargain. Divided, you beg.

That's there negotiating position; they will have to drop it down halfway to what they earn now and the $240,000.
Still that's an insane amount of money for an entry level tradie job. You better be worth that kind of money.

LOL that's because all you useless ****s can't even get a toilet to stop leaking.
As a union tradesmen I'm making so much money right now because people don't have any skills anymore. Can't do electric, plumbing, even paint a wall.
Yeah bro, I'll do it for you. Give me 500 dollars to come out and we'll go from there. Also show me your wife, I need to borrow her.

This. Unions always start contract negotiations by asking for the moon, all kinds of chit they know they will never get. Then they settle on about half or less than half of whatever they asked for, sometimes much less than half. Their logic is "aim for the stars so they hopefully meet the union halfway". Do with that info what you will.

The reason their houses are so big is that they are paying wholesale on materials and getting mates rates on consultants and trades
In terms of incomes, a white- collar consultant at the top of his game might make $500k or $600k, more as an equity partner, and will have been able to access at least some tax planning opportunities depending on if they have kids etc but the bulk of their income is taxed at 47-49%
Medical professionals can make more but they have professional indemnity/liability costs and other costs as well like maintaining a practice/rooms.
Tradies can easily start at $200k if they are decent at what they do and operating under their own ABN. HOWEVER:
1) they will start earning this at around 19-20 years old whereas the white collar counterparts are still part-way through their undergrad with maybe 5-7 years schooling ahead of them
2) they don’t have a student debt
3) they have more tax planning opportunities available to them
4) they can run the scam of repeatedly building and selling their “primary residence” which is tax exempt and rake in literally millions on top of their earned income
Yes slightly mad
Wish someone had explained the above to me when I was young

jesus christ, the way you are describing this there are so many things to take into account
since house purchase is literally the biggest cost of anyone's life sans kids possibly, this materials thing scales quite nicely no?
also, corporates cannot be making more than 200-300k the vast majority of them
you do not come out of undergrad in commerce (I just know this is business management in australia, I am in the UK) do not enter high finance or consulting…
Doctors need more schooling after base
honestly the way you are describing this makes the trades no brainer for anyone who is not disabled
of course there are injuries but there are insurance for that
also if you need to retire earlier you who cares if you have made a bunch of money you fly straight to Thailand for debauchery
But I also think that trades is something someone reasonably OK dexterity-wise (I mean, USA/AUS tradespeople out of shape galore anyway?) and the learning curve - that is something a commerce or medical or other graduates can go yes?
wouldnt that drive down prices given competition?
is it simply everyone wants to be tiktok or doctor but tiktok is paretto distribution whereas not every zoomer can get into medical school and until the chickens come to roost aka parents kick them out the supply is low
or senior tradies corner the business because they are senior?
but what you say is entry level so…????

1) boomers see trades as being less prestigious so push their kids into university
2) boomers in Australia got free uni. Now a useful degree is $100’s of thousands, but the debt doesn’t factor into people’s thinking. Nor the time out of the workforce while studying.
3) the highest tax rate (49%) used to capture maybe the top 2% of earners. Now it’s 30% or more. So it’s not how much you earn but how much you keep.
4) even if the tradie and white collar worker are on the SAME pay, the tradie is hundreds of thousands of dollars better off due to how our tax system works
5) a three year degree used to be enough to get a good job. Now it’s 5 years plus post grad plus professional year, so at least 7 years. Tradies do a 3 year aprenticeship starting as young as 16
6) houses did not used to be a way to generate such massive wealth. Now that a house is worth multiples of a yearly salary, AND they changed the tax laws to exempt them from tax, tradies who have a builders license can make millions for free.
7) tradies including builders used to make a pretty crappy wage. Now with the labour shortages they write their own cheques.
Two other factors:
8) if you are a trade or consultant that has an ounce of customer service skill you are set. Most trades will issue a quote and say “that’s it, don’t like it **** off”. If you take 5 minutes to explain why it costs that, what are the options/risks etc your clients love you and you are like gold. I have consultants and trades like this and I never look elsewhere.
9) all the successful tradies I know have a mentor in the game, who has put them onto a good accountant and got in their ear about starting a business, investing etc. this doesn’t happen in white collar fields. Some that didn’t have a mentor piss their money away on holidays and gambling and drugs etc

Honestly this is the most bubble thing ever. It takes, what, 2 years to learn a trade to the entry level? With essentially no barrier to entry, right?
Prepare for the massive influx of people into the trades driving prices back to $60k/yr for backbreaking labor.
