Proper rep etiquette?

Hey misc, I have recently gotten into an argument with another Miscer and I need the misc to decide who is right. So for a bit of background, after someone reps me I send them a short private message expressing that I am glad to hear that they found my comment funny/insightful/etc and thanking them for taking the time to rep me and wishing them luck in receiving the same Reputation back in turn. Well, I received some reps yesterday and sent my usual private message in return, however a miscer took issue with this. Here is our exchange (I won't out the phegot but feel free to out yourself if you wish):
OP: Hello [redacted], I just wanted to send you this quick message to thank you for adding to my reputation. I am happy to hear that my comment brought some laughter into your life. I hope that you may also be fortunate to receive some reputation yourself. Take care.

OP: Sorry, but the MISC rep system is what makes this site great. The rep system is how you separate the quality posters from the bad posters. I believe that reputation should be earned and not given. Best wishes.

OP: No, that is called rep trading and is against the integrity of the MISC. If you want reps, you have to earn them.
