I walked out of the movie theater about 30-40 minutes ago and started writing this review. I found this movie to be awesome.

The acting is great all-around. Nicholas Cage gave his crazy, Joker-ish performance; Blair Underwood has always been great since L.A. Law in the mid-1980s; and Maika Monroe (who's really pretty) did well as a young, socially awkward FBI agent. The film is well-shot, and there's a tense and lonely vibe that works well for this sort of horror movie. I like the score and the creepy one-second cuts to certain images, such as snakes and satanic idols

A lot of people have seemed to rail against the plot for various reasons. Some people say Nicholas Cage needed to show up more often. But I feel the less we see and know about him, the more scary his character appears: we never know about his history or background, for example.

Another criticism I've seen is that the plot feels slow. But I found the plot flowed very smoothly. If you're a fan of shows like Law & Order (like I am), you'll love the FBI investigatory portion of the movie, where Agent Harker combs through crime-scene photos and such. The investigatory scenes make up the bulk of the movie, right before the supernatural conclusion.

Finally, another frequent criticism is that the movie isn't a full-on horror like Nightmare on Elm Street or The Conjuring. But in terms of horror, the movie is what I might call, "classy horror." There are no jump scares or excessively gory scenes. The movie relies on storytelling, atmosphere, and the belief that certain details are more scary when left unseen. If you approach the film thoughtfully and pay attention, you'll find the horror

The movie isn't without criticism though. No spoilers: but the supernatural storyline at the end feels B-level and unconvincing if you think about it. The movie also telegraphs certain events, allowing the viewer to see them a mile away (e.g. a certain shotgun death; Agent Harker's mother; Agent Carter's family).

Regardless, I loved this movie and recommend
