Do you think it's possible for people to live happy on little money?

I look at these videos of people homesteading or whatever...live in some low COL town, little old house, growing some crops, old car, cook at home, canning food, create their own entertainment, maybe do a little something to bring in a little money, etc. Many of them seem to enjoy it. Plenty of time for family, some even have kids/wife.

Is it simply NPC thinking that we absolutely have to chase the carrot of more money, nicer things, more status to live happy and fulfilled lives?

I just finished reading a book written by an ancestor about his life 100 years ago. (He was the youngest brother of a great grandmother.) They had no money. Food came from hunting and gardening. As he wrote he remembers it as the best time of his life.

my grandfather worked at a cotton mill with 4 kids, home owner, car and wife that stayed home (did some hair on the side). my dad talks about the sears and roebuck catalogue coming around before school and they'd get to order some clothes to last them the entire school year...which made him a stickler for taking care of your clothes.

i think what i'm talking about is having everything you need, but not lot a lot of extra. even when you were broke you probably had most of the basics like food/shelter.

Real long-term happiness is not at all tied to money IMO, I personally am just as happy in a tiny rundown crappy condo as I am in a biurful new big house

Money is worthy of pursuit for reasons other than personal happiness

This is true and not just because you were probably younger

I've gone up and down in wealth several times and my happiness never changed. I did mostly the same things anyways. Went places with friends, got laid, traveled, exercised, fukt around on the internet, etc

As long as someone isn't starving, there's very little difference except luxury goods which are mostly useless

I guess if someone is an ugly meek loser, they would be happier and more confident with a lot of money though

right now:

If I wanted to vacation in Bali I can easily do so. If I wanted to take my family out to a nice steak dinner I can easil do so. If I wanted to buy a new car I can easily do so.


Money = Freedom. Money = being able to take care of your family and buy them all the finest things and finest education.


OP, you'll never feel the joy of seeing a child's eyes light up cause you bought him/her a PS5. You'll never know the joy of buying your son/daughter their first car. You'll never feel the joy of helping them pay for college.

For most men, happiness comes from providing for a family unit. If a man doesn't have a family then I guess it's possible to be happy with the bare minimum.


But if a man has a family, being poor is miserable. Imagine going Christmas shopping and seeing other men buy PS5's, Gucci bags and Jordans for his family while you're buying gifts at the discount aisle at Walmart.... It'd be miserable.

I don’t have kids yet but even tho we can easily afford stuff like that I’m not gonna spoil them. Just seems like it sets them up to be little entitled failures
