It's actually not bad at room temperature. Better than slightly cold. Ice cold is best obviously.

Its not a bad strategy, you'll quickly find which beers actually taste good. Chilled alcohol dampens down the flavors, which is why cheap nasty beer always suggests serving them 'ice cold'. It masks the terrible taste.

I'm a whisky drinker, and newbies always prefer whisky on ice as it makes it more tolerable. I can't really taste whisky if it's chilled, too muted.
