opinions. what does a Grlfriend mean when they say this to you

My son's mother said this to me once but she never would explain her self

"I will always love and defend you up to the point of self preservation"

Didn't know how to take that at the time and in retrospect I still don't

There's a kind of bond that will make her love and defend you, the son obviously, but for her own self preservation she doesn't want to be involved with you
