Three men have received jail sentences for their part in violent riots in Southport and Liverpool. There were scenes of destruction in Southport on Wednesday, July 30, 48-hours after a mass stabbing in the town killed three young girls and seriously injured several others. The three men have been jailed for between 20 months and three years after Liverpool Crown Court heard they were part of large groups of people who caused tens of thousands of pounds of damage, set vehicles alight, used violence towards a police officer and threw missiles.

Liam Riley, 40, of Walton Road, Liverpool, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after he admitted violent disorder and racially aggravated behaviour in Liverpool on August 3. Judge Andrew Menary KC said Riley was part of a "large marauding group of around 100 people" that threw missiles and damaged property. He had been drinking and made racist comments to police officers.

Declan Geiran, 29, of Kelso Road, Liverpool, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to violent disorder in Liverpool on August 3 and sending a malicious communication last year. The judge said Geiran had been previously convicted of harassing a woman and was part of a large group of people who tried to overturn a police van and then set it alight, causing £32,000 of damage.

Derek Drummond, 58, of Pool Street, Southport, has been sentenced to three years in prison after he admitted violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker in Southport on July 30. And Judge Menary said Drummond was an active part of a group using racist language, demonstrating outside a mosque, used significant violence towards an officer and picked up at least a brick.

Drummond told police he attended the earlier vigil and heard the disturbance in St Luke’s Road and went there alone, Liverpool Crown Court was told. He accepted his behaviour was “appalling” but could not give any explanation for it. He told detectives: “I’m absolutely ashamed of the way I acted. I’ve let Southport down, I’ve let the kids down, I’ve let my family down and I’m not here to deny anything.” The court heard he had 14 previous convictions including offences of violence.

"They were apologetic, they've offered to pay for all the damages and it wasn't them, it was just the minority, the idiots that thought it was OK to do what they did."

Police have five investigations running - the arrest, the violent disorder, criminal damage caused to the pub, an incident involving Sky News and a car being chased and window smashed.

After a trial at Newcastle Crown Court Carlos Neto, 18, and Lawson Natty, also 18, were convicted of manslaughter and unlawful wounding.

Neto, from Manchester, was jailed for nine years and two months, while Natty, from Newcastle, was handed two years and eight months at their sentence hearings in March.

But Gordon's mum Dionne Barrett was left devastated when she received a letter confirming Natty's early release at the weekend.
