The inability to afford back-to-school shopping is especially true for young parents – 39% of Gen Z and 37% of millennials.

"Education costs are primarily spotlighted at the college and post-college levels, yet parents are on the hook for school-related expenses as early as pre-K" said Courtney Alev, a consumer financial advocate at Credit Karma. "Many parents with young children are likely entering the school year already stretched thin after covering costs for summer childcare, which could be why many parents expect to be in the red after back-to-school shopping this year.

It's been known a lot of teachers end up footing the bill for school supplies for students, anyways. I remember when I was a little kid and my mom had to shop for school supplies, they gave us a list of everything we needed, but I barely used half of what she bought. I thought schools today most of their learning material was just watching movies, playing with tablets and laptops, etc.

Can't be true because every person I know has been on multiple vacations or 3 week+ vacations in europe all summer while driving new cars.

Surely they can afford some pencils and notebooks.

I know one thing...in the 1980s, public schools in the U.S. were generally free in the sense that students did not have to pay tuition to attend public schools. Public schools were funded primarily through local property taxes and state funds, which covered the cost of education. However, there were sometimes fees for certain activities, supplies, or extracurriculars, but basic education itself was free.

Probably because parents don't know how to spend their money well. It's not uncommon for people I know to let their kid spend $500-$1000/year on clothes for the school year. Blows my mind, because when I was going through school, my parents brought me to a t-shirt outlet (which still exists today and you can get 4 shirts for $10), and let me pick out a couple sets of blue jeans from costco and that was all I got for the year (probably spent $60-$100 max). Christmas time I was allowed to get a new pair of shoes which was the most expensive thing I had, which was probably around $40-$60 for a pair of vans or converse.

People need to realize the importance of budgeting correctly.

Why would you have children? Is it society's job to help you raise your children? I don't think I'd have children unless I could afford a maid/nanny to help us.

SO the rising cost of living has nothing to do with it? Thing that were much cheaper 20 years ago being double and triple the price now while wages haven't gone up?

Wages haven't gone up? Can't recall being paid more than $7/hr when I was a teenager. Pretty sure in-n-out and just about every fast food place is paying $20/hr minimum.

People spend their money like ****ing morons. Everyone needs the newest iPhones, the newest cars, they need to go out to eat every week, they don't meal prep, they need more tattoos. Most people are stupid. Nothing's changed about that.

If you can't afford back to school shopping, then you don't know how to spend your money. Simple as.

I agree somewhat. We got to pick out a folder, backpack, a few supplies, and then find sales for school clothes back in the day. If you had brothers then you got hand me downs too. Kids are spoiler as hell now
