Watched Rambo First Blood again

Been about 15 years, good stuff

Powerful scene at the end too I don't think I appreciated before, ahead of it's time on PTSD.

Was driving through Hope where it was filmed, and the people that owned the restaurant where we were eating said he was a stand up guy .
Quite often peopleโ€™s experiences with these Hollywood types arenโ€™t great ,but several people we talked to said he wasnโ€™t arrogant at all . Was a pretty big deal when he was staying in their town for them obviously

I'm not sure which one I would least like to suffer: Rocky's BrainDamage or Rambo's PTSD

I dunno man how do you watch Rambo and not appreciate the whole point of the movie

Unless you were like 12 years old last time you saw it, and it was just a cool action movie. Pretty sure this was me until I watched it again as an adult

Yep, the first Rambo is actually based. I just LOLed when that scumfuk Teasle got rekt by falling through the glass roof.

Honestly, I would have liked to see Rambo get a good defence attorney and argue to get him off without much if anything of a penalty - he did literally nothing but walk through a town with an arrogant fukface for a sheriff who intentionally taunted him and mistreated him, didn't even give him basic human respect.

Then they deliberately triggered his PTSD by restraining him like an animal, and they cry and act the victim when he fuks them up? The colonel gave the best advice and they didn't listen to him: Just let him go and arrest him somewhere else when he finds some menial job somewhere.

Would have been an anti-climax, but that was really the best way to deal with Rambo until the fat turd sheriff risked innocent townspeople getting hurt by going to war with him.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

It's definitely a great movie and survives the test of time. Also saw First Blood Part 2 for the first time in many years with fresh eyes, still just as good as before. But they were exposing the military-industrial complex back then and nobody gave a chit back then either. Maybe "exposing" isn't the right term but you get the point.

I've been on a bit of marathon lately, re-watching older movies while doing house renovations.

I am starting to sound like an old person but wtf happened? We used to make great movies every other month, if not more often. Great actors, great stories filled with suspense and great action scenes. Same could be said about music and just about everything else. How many amazing movie superstars did we use to have in the 90's? We are talking about dozens, if not more in every genre of cinema.

This days it's nothing but controversy and everything is politicized. I guess at least we have made enough of good movies back in the day for us to rematch now.

Finally!! The movie deserved better, and glad OP made this thread. *bow*

************************

One of my favorite authors,David Morrellwrote the book this 1982 movie was based on.

The truth is the book was far darker than the movie.

His teenage son died of Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and twenty + years later his granddaughter died of the same form of cancer. Naturally, the trauma of his loss influenced the author's work.

Rambo was given no first name in the novel, the name John in the movie means John Doe.

Rambo died at the end of the novel, killed by *Captain* Trautman.

Fortunately for us (I love the Rambo series), he did not die in the film so we were able to keep watching Rambo II and III.

Just do not confuse his debut 1972 novel "First Blood" with the film's novelization sequels II and III by the same author.

----------------------

My favorite was his 4th book, a 1979 horror story.

If you have a chance, go for it.

The novel takes place in a small Wyoming community called Potter's Field. Though normally a quiet town, Sheriff Nathan Slaughter suddenly finds himself confronted by inexplicable outbreaks of mindless violence, several bodies and the discovery of a new kind of viral infection that appears to be closely related to rabies, though it works much quicker. Along with the town coroner and an alcoholic reporter that he befriended years ago in Detroit, Slaughter attempts to save the townspeople from the cruel disease, which turns its victims into raving, uncontrollable murderers. The novel takes place in a small Wyoming community called Potter's Field. BTW, his (Rambo's) back is always my inspiration.

He had tragedy his whole life and deserved a happy ending. In the sequel he was supposed to return with his Rambolina after liberating POWs, but she got killed in front of him. In the last one he was living relatively in peace and then his goddaughter gets murdered FFS

Nepotism decides what gets made in Hollywood today, so naturally, there's going to be a lot of suck - especially with this onslaught of stupid superhero movies. WTF is with that?

There's still great stuff out there you just need to get more adventurous to find the talent now. Horror? Go to Japan and Korea. Action? Indonesia did great with The Raid and Night Comes for Us. India did well with Monkey Man. Streaming has good stuff constantly coming out - Extraction 2 was great.

Covid jammed up a lot of chit as well, so I think we're still coming out of that. I really think 2024 has been decent for movies, Dune 2 was a yearly win alone, and Mad Max Furiosa. With so many different platforms for media nowadays, movies get less pre-production time than they did in the 90s, so that also leads to lower quality.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

I came into this thread to mention the author. The funny thing is that I never read First Blood, but around 2011 I had been reading a bunch of the author's other books, then corresponded with him several times through email. He's a stand up guy.

But back on topic, I was probably younger than 12 the last time I saw the movie so I really would like to check it out again. I remember my stepdad explaining some of the PTSD stuff to me back then (I don't think PTSD was coined back then, so he talked a lot about shell shock), and he also told me some stories from his time in Vietnam.

The tragic thing is if they made that move now it would be a black, disabled trannie in the lead role and would be a flop (except in Hollywood awards).

This. The novel is much different and Rambo is far more unhinged and brutal.

Last time I watched Rambo I was thinking and joking to myself how everyone was so thin back in the early 80s. Entertaining film. Hollywood rarely makes films like that anymore. It wouldn't fit their political spin these days.

yeah, well that is not my opinion of him and i've lived there for years.

so i saw sylvester stallone at a grocery store in hope that day he did the helicopter scene. i told him it was awesome to meet him, but i didnโ€™t wanna be a jerk and ask for photos or anything.

he goes, โ€˜oh, like youโ€™re doing now?โ€™

i was kinda stunned and just said โ€˜huh?โ€™ but he kept cutting me off, going โ€˜huh? huh? huh?โ€™ while closing his hand in front of my face like he was doing some weird boxing move. i walked off, and i heard him chuckling as i left.

when i got to the checkout, i saw him trying to walk out the door with like fifteen bags of gummy bears without paying. the cashier was super polite and told him he needed to pay for them first. stallone acted like he didnโ€™t hear her and kept pretending to be exhausted, like he was training for a big fight. finally, he turned around and brought the bags to the counter.

when she started scanning them, he stopped her and said she needed to scan each one individually โ€˜to prevent any electrical interfettence,โ€™ and then gave me this dramatic wink. iโ€™m pretty sure โ€˜electrical interfettenceโ€™ isnโ€™t even a thing in this context. then, as she started to tell him the total, he kept yawning really loudly and dramatically like he was about to pass out from boredom. it was like watching a movie where the hero has an epic snack meltdown
