My understanding of 'portals' is that they're interdimensional. I've never experienced one myself, but based off of all of my occult experience, I would say that dreams for example are portals to another dimension. You can't exactly go into the spiritual realms with your physical body (Of course Jesus Christ did go straight to Heaven, but He's God so he can do many things humans cannot), but you can experience them through altered states of consciousness such as meditation/sleep/psychedelics. Accessing these realms is like accessing the wifi, radio, etc. You need to be tuned and using the right equipment.

In saying that, I've heard stories that in mesopotamia, etc, there are 'star gates' which are trans-dimensional portals.
