Do you know anyone with a gambling addiction? That’s a weird one to me

I went to a casino recently and lost $60. That isn’t much money but every time I lost my $20 it was a little painful.

I wonder what gets addictive about it for some people. I’m not passing judgement because you never know how someone got into an unfortunate position. I guess it’s harder for me to get it because I have the pain reaction as opposed to a rush.
I walk amongst you…….but I am not one of you.

I knew of someone who had a gambling addition. He wasn't someone i talked with, but he was someone who worked in the same industry I used to. He was known for his big gambling wins and to often gambling losses. He eventually committed suicide.

Depends on how you define addiction. I know a guy that regularly drops about 30K a trip at the casino. I wouldn't consider him addicted. He's just wealthy and bored.

He's invited me to go to the casino with him. Said he can hook me up with an all inclusive room and everything for free. I can just chill at the pool or whatever. I'll likely go at some point with my girl because its nothing to him, rooms, food, entertainment, etc all comped by the casino's.

My GF's ex used to drop around 40-50K a month at the casino (srs). He was probably addicted as he eventually went bankrupt and lost everything.

There is a gambling gene. If it is switched on you are a gambler who only really sees the wins and not the losses. If it's switched off then you get to keep the money in your pocket.

That's true for most things.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I don’t. But I think a lot of it could be explained by dopamine. It’s a hell of a drug. Kind of like adrenaline junkies (I get this one personally) or people that truly experience a runners high. That sort of thing.

Just a guess.

I had a therapy client with gambling addiction recently and so I did a lot of research of the topic since I had never treated it before.

It turns out that it's like every other "addiction" in that it's not about being addicted to something but rather feeling bad about yourself.

Gamblers tend to have childhoods where they feel like a "loser" for some reason. In addition, studies show that many gamblers have some kind of physical illness.

I thought that was amazing and shocking.

However, someone like Doc Holiday was a good example. He was a dentist, got a fatal disease, then became a crazy gambler. The logic behind that is the person feels like they are "losing" because they are sick and so they want to be a winner.

They also tend to have OCD like mystical beliefs about "luck" and so forth that make it worse.

Anyway, my client reported having a very bad childhood illness that continued into adulthood, and that his mom was a "whore" who caused his parents to break up, etc. He was a very handsome fellow but felt badly inside and so gambling was a dream of finally "winning" in a life where things don't work out well.

My roommate years and years ago had a bad one that was usually semi coke fueled

He would stay up all night gambling online and blowing lines

Dude was insane, he'd get up at 7 every morning for work lol he was generally still pretty good about his life, and he was a good roommate. Clean and made some good dinners for us sometimes. Never any issues with rent/utility payments

I rode with him to Atlantic city once to collect his winnings, he won 65k and took me to dinner and we did some slots.

He had a few times where he won big, but overall I'm sure he was still down

It's typical that gamblers will lose 5k, go into denial about it, then win 3k and feel like a king.

That's craziness.

I've a buddy that's really good at poker and he usually profits anywhere from 20-60K a year from playing. He keeps his money on the books at the casino. So at the end of the year he can tally up his winnings easily. He lives about 30 minutes away from the casino so he gambles all the time.

True gamblers aren't happy about the wins, they want the high highs and rush. Even the excitement about losing srs. Your buddy was probably upset he didn't win 5k

I can see how it's possible.

I never gamble but went to vegas last year and dropped 10,000 in 3 nights lol. It was a great time
Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

That's a story like in the 80s when someone would always know a 90 year old who smoked five packs a day and they didn't get cancer!

There's billions of people who gamble and gambling exists because most people never win but just lose constantly and play mind games with themselves.
