When dad was telling me stories about him and his crew “back in the day”, I told him if we went to school together I’d be taking his lunch money, and stuffing him in lockers.

He brought up how his friends would have his back. Told him if they were his friends, I’d wreck them too. You and your friends went swimming, and played jacks. I took karate, wrestled and lifted weights.

If I did this, my dad would tell his whole family that I had become very violent and was making direct physical threats towards him. They would all rally around him and contact me frequently voicing their concerns. After coming together, they'd decide it was best for me to enroll in an anger management course in hopes of better managing my frustrations. I'd decline and would be completely ostracized by the family for a good year or so.
