Great movies even though the stories are completely ripped off and unoriginal.

But it WAS overhyped mainstream bullsh/t.
I rented it once, watched it, and it was total garbage.
It had all the usual White Savior tropes you'd expect from hollywood:
1) Disillusioned and nihilistic (but has a heart of gold) White man take a job out of necessity.
2) The job requires him to exterminate or subjugate low IQ ethnics.
3) White man gets saved by low IQ ethnics, lives amongst them, and starts to sympathize with them.
4) White man tells his commanding officers they shouldn't be killing these low IQ ethnics, the commanding officers tells him "know your role, jabroni"
5) White man sides with low IQ ethnics to fight off other evil White men
6) White man falls in love with some low IQ ethnic woman from the tribe
7) Low IQ ethnics win battle against the evil White men
This White Savior schtick is so f/cking tired and boring....

My fiance talked me into it, I wasn't very enthused at first but was hooked pretty quickly.

If you didn't then it would be a good general story.
However, if you think about it, the aliens in the first film are idiots and selfish.
Humans show up, and they want something the aliens aren't using. So, the humans don't see what is wrong with being there.
Meanwhile...the aliens....WILL NOT TALK TO HUMANS...even though humans desperately try to the point of making simulated alien bodies to be able to relate to the aliens.
Only the aliens know that the planet is like a huge computer and they can download their consciousness into it.
The humans get frustrated and start fighting the aliens which destroys the natural computer system and causes the aliens to freak out.
So, the aliens are like black people who think they don't have to explain themselves or be accountable for their actions. But, it's worse because the aliens' massive racism could have prevented the whole thing had they just explained what the planet was because there's no way humans could relate to it.
The story is bizarre in that the aliens are the "bad guys" but they aren't supposed to be.

Pros:
Visual Spectacle: "Avatar" is renowned for its groundbreaking visual effects and 3D technology. The world of Pandora, with its bioluminescent flora and fauna, is visually stunning and immersive.
Environmental Themes: The movie addresses themes of environmentalism, imperialism, and the exploitation of indigenous cultures, which resonate with many viewers and offer food for thought.
World-Building: Cameron's creation of the Na'vi culture and the ecosystem of Pandora is rich and detailed, providing a fully realized fantasy world.
Box Office Success: It held the record for the highest-grossing film of all time until it was surpassed by "Avengers: Endgame," and then reclaimed the title with its re-release, indicating its widespread appeal.
Cultural Impact: "Avatar" influenced subsequent films and video games in terms of visual effects and 3D technology, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in cinema.
Cons:
Story and Characters: Critics often argue that the storyline is derivative, drawing heavily from other narratives like "Dances with Wolves" or "Pocahontas," but set in space. The characters, particularly the human characters, are sometimes criticized for being one-dimensional or stereotypical.
Dialogue: The script has been criticized for lacking depth or memorable lines, with some feeling that the dialogue doesn't match the sophistication of the visuals.
Pacing and Length: The movie's runtime is significant, and some viewers find the pacing slow, especially in the first half where much of the plot is exposition and world-building.
Emotional Connection: While the visuals are impressive, some argue that the film fails to create a deep emotional connection with its audience, which can be crucial for a movie's lasting impact.
Public and Critical Reception:
"Avatar" received mixed reviews. While many praised its technical achievements, there was a divide over its narrative and emotional depth.
Over time, its cultural impact has been debated. Some see it as a revolutionary film for its technological advancements, while others view it as a visually spectacular but narratively forgettable experience.
Whether "Avatar" is a good movie largely depends on what you value in cinema. If you prioritize visual innovation, environmental messaging, and world-building, you might find it exceptional. If you're more focused on narrative originality, character development, or emotional depth, you might find it lacking. Like many films, its goodness can be subjective, varying from person to person based on individual tastes and expectations.

The only film where the White Savior schtick was done well was The Last Samurai.... every other film that ran this schtick was insufferably cringe.

You'll completely forget about it in a week. All you will remember is it had pretty good graphics.
The first one was better much better than the second one. The second one was all filler had them have to rescue their kidnapped kids like 3 times. Cameron had no story idea for the second one except that he wanted it to be under water. The first one at least had the basic Pocahontas story holding it together.
So I can't call the Avatar movies bad, but they are not exactly classics either. They are more like tech demos. You watch them and are entertained enough, but you won't be wanting to buy the action figures, or even ever watch them again.
