Oil changes are a scam. Srs.

It's just a gimmick to sell oil and keep dealerships and jiffy lube rich.

I'm at 18,000 miles since my last oil change and everything is fine. I just top off with a quart ever 5k miles.

Auto industry would tell me I should have spent like $700 in oil changes over that time.

Oil changes are like cholesterol in your arteries.

Of course the car won't show horrible signs of damage when it only has 50,000 miles and you're going 18k between changes. But when you begin needing $8000 engine repairs at only 110,000 miles when those things typically wouldn't happen until 200k, you'll realize how much the $50 oil change helped things.

I agree that every 3000 is unnecessary if you're using a good synthetic oil, I usually wait 5000 or so. But 18k is too long and is doing damage to your engine.

Time matters since short drives fill crankcase with moisture change it yearly regardless and get in freeway sometimes

It's a lot like going to the dentist. You can get away with only going when you have a problem, but I'd rather have a minor inconvenience/expense every six months than a massive headache every few years.

Same thing with toothbrushes. They say replace quarterly but I've used the same one for 10 years and still works fine. It's all a scam to keep dentists and pharmacies in business.

Okay OP, you think that's a good plan, you'll learn. FAFO

Everyone else, take it from someone in the industry. We don't make money off oil changes. Jiffy Lube and places like that suck, but they make money off the upsells. As oil is in the engine, there are a lot of changes that take place where properties change and will go out of spec fast. The thing about not changing your oil is that it's like smoking, drinking, covid shots and boosters, ect. You get away with it for a while and by the time you see symptoms the damage is done and it will only get worse. I've been in the industry for 25 years and have seen a thing or two. Where it really causes trauma in today's cars is the piston rings because so little oil is on them and what they go through it puts a lot of stress and once your rings wear that's when you start getting blowby, oil in your PCV system that goes into the engine clogging your intake, fuel contamination of the oil, more partials and impurities in the oil further causing wear, sludge buildup, burning oil, ect.

neither matters as much as usage.

If you barely ever use the vehicle, then base your changes off time and do it once or twice a year. It's $100 fukkin dollars.

If you use the vehicle normally, say as a commuter, every 10k with synthetic is just fine.

if you use the vehicle aggressively (drive a sports car fast, tow/haul heavy loads with it, use a truck offroad, etc) then 5k is a pretty safe bet.

What ever you do, do not ONLY use a vehicle only for very short trips, or the engine will not get hot enough to burn out any built up condensation and your oil turns to sludge. Wanna get it up to operating temp and let it sit there for at least a few mins.


OP's post is especially idiotic today, because unless his engine is leaking a ton of oil, adding a quart every month without doing anything else would blow his engine.

I was wasting a lot of money when I first got my new truck. Was used to driving old beaters that needed constant maintenance. I rolled up to the mechanic at 3k miles one day and the mechanic looked at my oil like "ehhh this looks brand new bud."

get yourself full synthetic 10k miles or 15k miles and bam you are set. personally I just do 2 oil changes one for summer and one for winter. regardless of mileage with full synthetic.


this is advice for a regular driver obviously not some track car.

sonny boy the time itself does not matter but how often you start your car up matters big time. The wear and tear on your engine at start up is at its worst. The city dweller who hardly puts any mileage on his pisser but starts his car 3 or 4 times per day to drive just 5 or 6 miles puts more wear on his engine than the son who starts his car up only twice and drives 100 miles per day.
