This is the first public release of Snails - the forum engine that powers ObnoxiousBrutes. Snails is a custom-built engine designed specifically for serving Misc. content. It is lightweight, highly flexible, and optimized for performance, with a minimal memory footprint, allowing it to run efficiently, and at a low cost, on low-end hardware. The engine is named after Snails, a Misc. user who passed away in 2022.

The v0.9 release is a preview release. The purpose of v0.9 is to gain stability, improve the user experience, and tune the core features. The codename "JestBrah" comes from the fact that while v0.9 may look pretty, it is most likely broken inside.

This release introduces a long-awaited and much-requested feature: search! Yes, something that was essentially useless in the olden days… for reasons still unknown. Searching has been a core component of databases for decades. Additionally, the v0.9.3 release restores over 70,000 threads—far surpassing the original (modest) goal of 10,000 threads for this launch.

• Searching: You can now search thread titles and users. Searching individual posts is targeted for v0.9.4.

This release improves search functionality, restores polls (originally scheduled for v0.9.3 but delayed), and adds experimental retroactive support for (evaluating) embedding Instagram, TikTok, and Vocaroo (funny thread!). X, formerly Twitter, might be added later as its embedding requires additional data. Additionally, the v0.9.4 release restores over 80,000 threads — once again surpassing the goal of 10,000 threads for this launch.

This release brings significant performance improvements, activates the notification system (originally planned for version 1.0.0), and adds over 100,000 additional threads. Many of the enhancements are behind the scenes, including fine-grained permission control and support for retention policies (more on that later). Version 0.9.5 was not part of the originally advertised Q2 2025 roadmap, but it implements many features that were scheduled for version 1.0.0. My goal remains the same: to release the full 1.0.0 version in June.

The long-awaited 1.0.0 release is finally here. I gave it my best shot to make it to the one-year mark (September 19, 2024) but ultimately conceded that it was not ready. This update opens the forum to the public and restores more than 100,000 additional threads. With this release, ObnoxiousBrutes now reaches well into content from 2016, and more is still to come. Previously, only a limited number of users had restricted access through invitations, while the forum remained closed overall. Version 1.0.0 is named after Lunatic because, although it has matured into 1.0.0, it still requires a lot of attention and isn’t quite ready to stand on its own. This is the most significant update to Snails since v0.9.0.

Important Information Before Joining ObnoxiousBrutes

• The system is still being tuned - caches, timers, and other backend features are actively under development.


• Old threads remain locked for now, but you are free to create new ones.


• This is not yet a complete forum experience — DMs, polls, attachments, and advanced post formatting are not currently supported.


• The Forum Rules, Terms of Use, and Privacy Policy are new, but share many similarities with the old Misc. Please make sure you read them before participating.
