Trump won 2016 because both sides wanted an outsider. The Democrats sabotaged theirs and the GOP let it happen.
The polls don't match up because the enthusiasm gap what all for him, now it's mostly against.
Trump no longer represents an outsider, he no longer represents a wild card. People know what he is and they don't like it.
