It looks like ETL goes for like $35-50 in stores in KY (so I've heard), and the secondary market markup is like $100-110. Some people just go clear off shelves and hoard it to resell. Even some store clerks selling entire cases of the stuff on secondary the day they get delivery...

I'm starting to actually really like the smell of bourbon. Is that a start to liking it? Haha.

I will say, since I started putting an ice cube in it I can drink is easier. Once I get used to the burn I feel when I swallow it I will be good. Been having a few drams a night, seems to get a little better each time. I find myself thinking about it at work and looking forward to coming home and drinking a bit already, even though I'm not fully enjoying the flavor at the moment. I also want to go out and keep buying more but I guess I'll finish the two bottles I have first.

Takingmuchsmaller sips helped me really start to understand the flavors, mouthfeel, and lasting aftertaste. Also tasting higher and lower proofs side-by-side, and realizing the differences and your preferences between traditional, wheated, and ryes.

Traditional: Sweet/spicy, fairly balanced (Jim Beam, Evan William, Wild Turkey, Knob Creek)

Wheated: Sweeter, less burn (Maker's, Four Roses, Larceny, Old Fitzgerald)

Rye: Much more bite and spicy. Some ryes (unfortunately) have that burn without the tasty spice.

3 of the stores are in TN and are kinda known for the barrel picks. Then I'm stopping at a liquor barn in KY

Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace are both pretty low on the rye content, but they don't make public their actual percentages of what is in them. At the same time, they aren't full wheated bourbons like Weller or Pappy.

They will definitely taste different to you than any of the ryes like Sazerac, Knob Creek Rye, Bulleit Rye, etc

Depends on the money you want to spend and how you drink it. Their basic yellow label bottle is good value for what you get. Small batch and single barrell are very tasty. The barrell strength is a little more pricey and not what I would be starting with if you're just getting into it.

Yeah the small batch is pretty good and a great place to start. Ive gone through several bottles of each, and the small batch is great for the price.

Has anyone else toured the Four Roses distillery and felt very underwhelmed? We went to several earlier this year and 4R was the least interesting of them all.

A few handy terms:

Single Barrel: ordinarily the distillery will blend together whiskey from multiple barrels to achieve a consistent product. Single Barrel bottles are from a single barrel, so while they will still taste quite similar from bottle to bottle, you'll get a little of the individual character of that particular barrel. Usually these are labeled with the barrel #, date etc which is kind of cool.

Barrel Strength: the whiskey that comes out of a barrel is cut with water to reach the desired alcohol content (almost always 80 proof/40% alcohol). Barrel strength is uncut whiskey, so it's stronger, often MUCH stronger. These are interesting to drink but tend to be pretty wild - there's a reason most whiskey is cut to 80 proof for general population drinking, and some people even add water or ice to dilute them further.

Single Malt: Many of the most popular scotches (Johnny Walker, Dewar's, Chivas) are blends from different distilleries. A single malt is the product of a single distillery, and is made using only malted grains. Malting adds time and cost so cheaper scotches are cut with unmalted grains. A single malt has a lot in common with Bourbon - not in flavor but in the idea that it's the product of one distillery aimed at the consumer instead of being produced for resale and blending.

Recently picked up this new Bourbon. Got it on batch 2, which is cool to me. It's not bad. Run of the mill $21/bottle. Not as tasty as Bulleit but a better standalone than say a standard Jim Beam. Comes out of North Charleston, SC.

Oh boy, I think I like this. Drank it faster than any other I've had so far, burn was not nearly as bad. Can't tell if it's just this kind I like or I'm already getting used to it.




EDIT: Just poured some Buffalo Trace, definitely getting accustomed to the burn, that wasn't nearly as bad either.

Rye's will be labeled as a Rye on the bottle. There are very few wheated bourbon's on the market. Some wheated bourbon's will be labeled like 1792 Sweet Wheat but the majority will not.

Define bottom shelf. Old Grand Dad makes a single barrel that I was really tempted to pick up.

For me, the most consistent bottom shelf bourbon is Evan Williams. Not the greatest ever but it's a tried and true liquor for under $15 that is always a solid choice.

I don't think I have had any Henry McKenna, period. How is it?

@Peace- Bottom shelf Bourbons that are good enough to drink straight are Ancient Age, Evan Williams, and Benchmark. Benchmark is my preference since I want something that's ok to mix but sippable neat, and I think it works well, but any of those three is good.

If you haven't had ancient age give it a try, someone in here (I think BlueSasquatch) really loves the stuff.

And if you want to drink bottom shelf like a badass.... Old Crow.

I'll be the one weirdo who admits four roses doesn't do it for me. I've toured the distillery and really like the brand and how authentic they are while trying to keep a fair price on their bottles, I just don't personally care for their flavor of whiskey. I am in the VAST minority on this - most people LOVE 4 roses, I think it's... Fine. Just fine.

That said, I liked the single barrel a lot better than the standard. Maybe try it out.

It's 80 proof so keep it away from your hair tho.
