learned this the hard way. phucked my ****t up for a month doing heavy deads. now i just don't go as heavy. whats the point of going really heavy if you ain't competing and harming your body in the long run. im sure you can make close to the same mass gains by limiting your self to only going to 70-80% of your max.

Powerlifting and bodybuiding are opposing goals, I never understood why people try to achieve one by doing the other. For powerlifting you're trying to move a weight as easily as possible and for bodybuilding you're trying to make a muscle(s) move a weight with as much difficulty as possible. They both require using completely different leverages and form to achieve these goals.

We all know people do it due to ego and insecurity, even pro bodybuilders do this. Dallas McCarver would do a lot better if he went and trained with Dorian.

I'm confused... so do people that deadlift 500 look like skinny nonlifters like OP stated or are they fatsos for life? does diet play a roll in this at all? or is it because they choose to deadlift, that it negates any nutrition and they are doomed to being forever unaesthetic nonlifters?

this is far too complicated for me to process. guess that's that

You can get good at deadlifts by practice or by being heavy.

I don't dead lift as it's not a very difficult exercise and did not deliver any gains that I could tell. I prefer squats. You won't find any skinny guys who can squat three plates as compared to the numerous skinny guys who can deadlift three plates.

Ofcourse, if you are heavier, you will be able to do more weights.

Insufficient data to back up OPs assertions

Because in 25 years training I have only seen one person do a deadlift with good form, Srs.

I just wanted traps. I was told deadlifts would help, and I always did progressive overload anyway. Got to a respectable deadlift in no time, wasn't even planned, just happened.

The traps never came btw, they improved signifcantly but never had the "juicy AF" traps that I wanted. And no, I hate rack pulls

I don't think anyone should discourage beginning lifters from on the most important compound lifts out there?

If you are a natural lifter and you're trying to pack on mass -you are going to have to deadlift heavy once in a while. There's no way around it.

I deadlift all the time. I just keep it below an 8ish RPE and do sets of 6-8 most of the time and occasionally will do some triples. Never 1 rep max on anything anymore. I used to train powerlifting and lol at that. Being leaner is 100 times better than being 10% stronger.

Natty and want to be big, pretty much gotta be strong that means having respectable numbers in the big compounds.

Geared to the gills, meh can do a lot of stuff and get big.

Personally I like finding a balance of strength and leaness. When I get too lean I feel like $hit.

Deadlift is one of the GOAT movements for creating a thick, powerful looking physique. Plus the exercise is fun, easier than other lifts to progress in and just looks badass when you start shifting some heavy fukin weight. Show me any non-fat 700lb+ pullers who don't have thick, dense looking muscles.

I can do nearly 4 plates now and I'm not very big. I think my form is good and the only time I injured my back was from doing ATG squats.

I remember reading starting strength years ago and thinking it was mostly broscience, but never really questioned deadlifts.

Food for thought OP, thanks.

If you look at the avis of the people advocating no deadlifts you'll understand.

So what is the cutoff/balance between the benefits of deadlifts vs risk?

Agree 100% on this. BRB risk ****ing up your joints, back, risking hernias etc. for minimal improvement in any day to day functions whilst not even looking like you lift

I mean each to their own and that, but what a pointless way to spend your time in the gym

Deadlifts are not mandatory if there is a medical reason to not do them, a lot of variants work well. Personally for growth, I saw my best results running BBB template of 5/3/1 and doing 5x10 sets. Noticeable hamstring growth, but they really sucked doing that much volume. RDLs are a good substitute as well for hamstring / posterior chain. There are always ways to work around certain things, but IMO in terms of efficiency hard to beat squats and deadlifts for overall development with minimal time spent in the gym. I have visible abs at high bodyfat percentages just from the core strength built from squats and deads.

Agree as well. Deads are good, can't deny that they burn mad calories, but to me it's silly seeing these dudes lifting heavy, when they don't look like they even lift.

In other words, it's not contributing to how their overall physique looks nom say'n?

deadlifts are not mandatory on dc, I can also do rows for back thickness. I just prefer deadlifts because they work the overall back.

Fuark. This post hit home OP, srs.

Got serious in the past year since I got a home gym with power rack. Did Starting Strength, then GSLP: Lifts all went up like CRAZY but I also got chunky. Cutting from 20% BF right now and honestly think I'm going to look like a DYEL again when I'm done, even though I'm SO much stronger than I was.

Oh well, right? Nothing to do but start again.
