History does play a factor in how people's families are well off, and many of it can be race related, especially in countries like america, but mostly today is just a result of poor cultural correlated decisions
Social privilege is a real thing though, can be race, gender, and genetic, like this for example

a whole lot of ignorance ITT. just lol @ everyone raging about this video as if privilege isn't a real thing. everybody is born into different circumstances, some much more advantageous than others. therefore, they are the privileged relative to people who were born into much less advantageous circumstances.
yes, you can say that people born into shiitty circumstances had shiitty parents who didn't make good life decisions. that was certainly the case for my parents. but that doesn't change the fact that there is a discrepancy in socioeconomic standings. some privileged, some not so much. if this was 10 years ago, I would tell you my sob story and biitch and moan, but that's just the way the world is. compared to the vast majority of the rest of the world, I'm very blessed so can't complain.

"“We have this notion in America of equality of opportunity and where you start shouldn’t influence on where you end up,” says Erin Currier, director of Pew’s financial security and mobility project. “This data shows that that does not translate to reality. A family’s economic circumstances play an exceptionally large part in determining a child’s economic prospects later in life. Families and kids raised at the bottom are least likely to attend preschool, high school, and attend and complete college, or have any savings to help their children. They get into this vicious cycle.”

Pro-capitalists usually argue under the assumption that a level playing field exists. It doesn't, and likely never will, under any economic system, due to nature and nuture.
'Everyone has the same ability to rise to the top in the US'... No, they don't. Our upbringing, parents, and social environment play a key role. Exceptions (eg. people who grow up in crack riddled ghettos, to drug addicted parents to become millionaires), are the exception no the rule
A lot of people living a good life (from the US IME) tend to put it all down to their personal effort.

Nepotism is discouraged explicitly in US culture, the 'suckers' believe in individualism whereas nepotism (and collectivist culture) is practiced amongst upper class Americans.
"...the most common shared trait among entrepreneurs is access to financial capital—family money, an inheritance, or a pedigree and connections that allow for access to financial stability. While it seems that entrepreneurs tend to have an admirable penchant for risk, it’s usually that access to money which allows them to take risks.
And this is a key advantage: When basic needs are met, it’s easier to be creative; when you know you have a safety net, you are more willing to take risks. “Many other researchers have replicated the finding that entrepreneurship is more about cash than dash,” University of Warwick professor Andrew Oswald tells Quartz. “Genes probably matter, as in most things in life, but not much.”

Apply some social justice principles to an everyday activity and add some manipulative music to it. So profound!!!
Guess what, life isn't fair. There are differences in intelligence, talents, perseverance, family background, economy etc between people. Deal with it and make the best of your situation, and stop whining about others having a better starting point.

as for solutions, this is a tough one but I would say that awareness is a good first step. so what people are doing by pointing it out is by no means wrong. what I don't agree with is pointing fingers at specific groups or individuals. as far as the video is concerned, race wasn't once mentioned though it's no big secret that generally black communities have it worse off in terms of their economic situation and social upbringing. but taking it at face value, the video wasn't intended to shame any specific groups, simply raise awareness.
personally, I don't think that a "level playing field" will ever exist so long as we're a part of our current system. the current social hierarchy, though subtle, isn't too far off from India's caste system. the "untouchables" are there to serve as an anchor for the system so that people can bully them and abuse them as they like. this schadenfreude keeps the upper castes happy while the untouchables are kept down. this is simply the government's way of controlling the people, both the upper castes and the lower. the same form of control exists in the US government, just at a much more subtle level.

If you get sunburned take two steps back
If you have a statistically bigger chance chance at a hip hop music career take two steps forward
If you can naturally sing and dance take two steps forward
If your athleticism has gotten you special treatment take two steps forward
If you have a better chance at job and school applications because of the color of your skin, take two steps forward
If you are above seven feet tall, and the color of your skin makes it so there is a 14% chance you're in the NBA take a step forward

can't stand hearing this CHIT anymore. every person who is successful that is not blown up constantly in media, WORKED FOR IT. what do you call it when you're the son/daughter of Morgan Freeman, or Will Smith, or Chris Rock? white people still get denied jobs, we still need experience, we still need education, and if those people REALLY are in the back of the line, it is NOT the fault of a white person. in fact, if you're black, you have more opportunity today than ever. what a self hating, liberal white guilt implying video. I'm watching tvright now'Car Fix' and there's a black guy on the show with a 'J2 Performance' shirt on. He's going to tune this Ferrari they have on there. ffs

The premise of the video is that, as people mentioned ITT, most people are born into better circumstances than others. Many people get handouts most of their lives while others have to work their way up just to get out of what they were brought into.
