Kurt Russell nails the role, and the ambiguous ending was excellent. I concluded that Childs was indeed a Thing for a couple reasons.

1. He just wonders out of a snow storm, having been missing for ages with no explanation.

2. His coat is of a different colour, meaning he changed coat for no reason other than because his original coat was torn up from being attacked.

3. He says to MacReady 'so you're the only one who made it' rather than, 'so WE are the only ones who made it'

Timeless movie and interesting considerations but if you take the prequel into account then Childs was not the Thing. Why? In the prequel they made a point of showing the Thing could not replicate metal like teeth fillings and jewelry which would include an an earring. Childs is clearly seen showing his earring at the end scene. This would indicate he was in fact himself and had not been compromised by the Thing.

IIRC three people including Mac went to blow up the substation and only Mac came out, so saying "You are the only one who made it" kinda makes sense.

Didn't even notice the jacket change for Childs.

Kurt tricks Childs into drinking gasoline at the end. He pretended it was whiskey, but it really was full of gasoline, so Kurt knew Childs was the Thing...

It's a favorite of mine. Great effects, better than CGI imo. The feeling of paranoia and isolation are strong.

I thought the prequel was good, obviously had a lot to live up to. Honestly when I went to see it I was expecting a remake and was pleasantly surprised it was a prequel. Some of the crappiness of 80s film technology adds to this film in a lot of ways, the prequel doesn't have that.

Alien/Aliens are pretty similar to me
