So besides opening amazon packages and cutting the ocassional zip tie... what are these knifes actually used for?

Don’t get an expensive knife right out the gate - get something decent but expendable. You’re not going to know what you like, how ouch pocket/clip space you’re ok losing to it, and then there are things like learning to properly hone and strop it so you don’t have to pay someone to grind a new edge on it later, etc.

I have a benchmade that I like a lot but my current favorite is the SOG Aegis AT.

Not much, I’m an avid knife guy, but what I carry day to day is a small razor blade loaded flipper - about the size of two stamps edge to edge because good luck taking your expensive ass honed edge knife and running it through corrugated cardboard and tape gunk and sht.

Ok. In a previous life I was a knife/sword guy.

I really like Cold Steel products as they are both functional and affordable. And they have a ton of options. They also have testing videos on YouTube to give you an idea of their performance.

Get a nice benchmade just to satisfy the itch and be a safe queen, sebenza or something. The get a cheap flip out flat razor blade exchangeable thing for edc.
Lifts:

In other news I really like the Cutco double-D serration pattern. Their knives are really good and my favorite is their hunting knife with orange handle. It’s perfect for field-dressing deer
