I follow the following process for buying cars and its golden..
Get financing for what I want from my credit union
Email three dealers two days before end of month
Tell them they have a car that I want and I will be buying a car on the final day of the month. I will buy the car from the dealer that has the best price. There wont be any back and forth haggling for a lower price. I want best and final. If they are excluded because of their first price, that is it and there will be no second chances. I also state that I want to walk into the dealership, sign and be out the door within one hour. If they can beat my finance percentage from a credit union they should do it in advance of me stepping foot on the dealership.
Since I started this process I havent spent more than an hour in a dealership. I've done this three times (all pre-covid) and have averaged 15% off of MSRP. Each time I've purchased a car using this method I've joined a forum specific to that car and started a price paid thread. I've been in the top 5% of lowest price paid for the vehicle using this process.

How bad is your credit that you intetest rate is 18-21%
If you're 740 or above the highest is like 7% and that's probably too high.

I took financing the last time I bought a car to get the "financing incentive". They told me I had to wait 3 payments before paying it off, but fuk that. I paid a few hundred in interest to get a few thousand in financing incentive.

Damn, I don't feel so bad about when they tried to give me 16% interest.
FYI I went to another Dealer and they went through a credit union for me. Walked out at 9%

You're not going to get a deal walking into a dealership because the salesperson has to eat. Always deal with internet sales.
I have a Cap One CC, I get offers from their auto finance. I highly recommend this, they pre-approve you for a bunch of dealerships and each vehicle they tell you the the rates / terms. I think I was at 2.69% for an Acura I wanted.
I go into the dealership, drive it, and we sit down for the paperwork. Price has already been determined. I then show the sales rep I have the financing, he goes to the finance manager. They come back and beat the rate by 50 bps, offer me 2.19%.
I buy the car, it's certified, etc.
Was a layup.

They work with banks.
You would be better off going to the bank.
And even better off going to a credit union for an auto loan.
That would be low interest at like 4.25% for the money to buy a car new or used in cash.
Auto dealerships are notoriously greedy with financing and prefer people to just buy in cash.
If they get financing from someone it is at high interest and so they are also high interest moneylenders.

You are really at the mercy of the person you borrow money from if you go into debt to people who lend money.
Especially if you rely on your own private transport rather than public transport for getting to work.
Credit unions are just low interest because they are a voluntary union of local depositors.
The people who have accounts in the credit union are part owners in the organization.

Keep your vehicle and wait about a year.. the car market is fixing to be in shambles. Interest rates for an 800 credit score are like 8% on a new car right now. The entire market is gonna look like 2008 in the car world. Best bet is to buy via private sale or copart auction right now very srs. Also, never buy a car with debt bro what are you thinking? Buy something in cash... that way you aren't getting rammed in the arse. Occasional repairs are soo much cheaper than paying a premium for a new "reliable" truck.

Times have changed
It’s not the car salesman you need to worry about. It’s the finance manager you need to worry about. They are the devil
Hold onto your cars as long as possible because the fewer interactions you have with these scum in your life the better off you will be. Buy a newer car so it’ll be longer before you need a new one. Maintain your car and drive defensively so you won’t need to go to dealer again
Don’t ever step into a dealer without having an out the door price inclusive of all fees and taxes. Most dealers won’t do this over phone or email. Forget those, do business with the ones that will. Then go in with your quote and hold your ground. The finance manager will do everything he can to manipulate you into getting extra warranties and other bullchit. Pay close attention to the forms you are signing incase they are not honoring your quote or sneak in other stuff. Walk out if you have to

I’ve helped a few people out with finding cars and we’ve looked private party first
One guy needed a pickup truck for work. We literally looked at a dozen private party trucks. Every single one, had odometer rollback or the condition was grossly misrepresented. One of them the guy claimed he just had the engine/trans rebuilt and you could clearly tell the shop receipt was just something he made up with Microsoft paint. He couldn’t tell us what shop the work came from for us to verify (we were just going along with it for the lols)
Every time. The best deal eventually came from a small used car lot
A private party seller doesn’t care about their reputation. If they fuk someone over by ripping them off it doesn’t matter. A small car lot at least has their reputation to care about

Was looking for a car in January. There was a 2019 cadillac I looked at and they wanted almost as much as a new one, so bought a 2023. Pitted two dealerships against each other who each had the identical car. The first one I physically showed up at, I test drove with the salesman and then the sales manager took me in a room and said they couldn't match the other dealership and that that dealership was just moving inventory and not making any money. I said 'if this is the game you're going to play then I'll go to the other dealership now'. Apologized to the salesman and and he went to get my car.
They kept me waiting outside for 10 minutes and then the second sales manager came out to talk to me and I said 'don't waste my time, you know the price I am willing to pay'. Paid cash. Left with the car. As someone previously said, it's just a game. Don't take it personally, everyone is just trying to make a buck.
If you're going to buy used then do it from a private party. Find a local mechanic who will hook it up to their computer for $100 and give their opinion on the car. No need to go to a dealership for a used car.

I think many banks give higher rates on older cars. A 2017 isn’t “old”, but it’s 6 years from new and many banks have the cutoff at 5.
Now isn’t the time to buy a car mane, unless it’s new so you can get the great rates from the manufacturers bank. Like Honda Financial, or GM, Ford Credit, etc.
