People spend their money like ****ing morons. Everyone needs the newest iPhones, the newest cars, they need to go out to eat every week, they don't meal prep, they need more tattoos. Most people are stupid. Nothing's changed about that.

If you can't afford back to school shopping, then you don't know how to spend your money. Simple as.
This is all true but can't deny things are much more expensive now. When I was making $7 or so an hour my apartment was only $325. a month in a good area and a good sized apartment. Good luck finding an apartment for even double that. My first house cost $75K for a 3 bd/1.5 bath ranch. Now it would be $250-3ooK

Pretty sure when parents talk about back to school shopping it also includes clothes for fall/winter. Kids grow out of their clothes pretty quickly. Most don't stay in the same size year to year. Plus the teachers give the kids a list that has a lot more on it than a couple pencils and a notebook. They also ask for supplies for the classrooms like tissues, lysol wipes etc.

Strange, they can afford their tiny little $10 carton of cigarettes that they little onto the street but can’t afford a pack of pencils for their child.

Clothing for the kids isn’t “back to school shopping” it’s regular upkeep of having kids.

In NYC public schools, students get a free laptop and most work is done through Google Classroom. However, schools have books, paper, pencils, pens, stationery items, art supplies, etc for students if need be (a lot of it comes from teachers' pockets). Plenty of text books are available as well (print and digital). Parents are encouraged to buy their kids school supplies but if they face economic hardships, schools can help them out.

It looks like there is a backpack in there. When I was a kid, backpacks were easily like $40-50 in 1997 dollars. The inclusion of a backpack in that <$50 total tells me backpacks are much, much cheaper in 2024; everything else on a back-to-school list should be cheaper as well. I understand at your advanced age you're probably very nearsighted and couldn't make out anything besides the pencils and notebooks, but you could have asked your in-home care worker to take a look at it for you first.

Literally impossible unless the main breadwinner Is a Financial Mogger.
Most households with multiple kids need 2 breadwinners working 40 to 60 hours a week just to survive.
