Bernie Sanders is having a town hall on Fox News and just gave out bad advice so let's all get on the same page.

His advice was'get to a doctor if you're sick.'

No. That's not the correct advice.

The official advice from the CDC and WHO for most people and which I fully agree with is:

If you are under 60 and have no serious chronic health conditions: Stay home if you're sick and your symptoms are mild and you can safely manage your own symptoms at home.

If you are over 60 and/or have serious chronic health conditions (such as lung disease, heart disease, diabetes) -

Watch for symptoms and emergency warning signs
Pay attention for potential COVID-19 symptoms including, fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
If you feel like you are developing symptoms, call your doctor.
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately.
In adults, emergency warning signs*:
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
New confusion or inability to arouse
Bluish lips or face
*This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

If you've been close to a known infected person recently and are concerned, self-quarantine and -CALL- either your doctor or local health department.

I'd also add - if you're sick and staying home with others around, maintain as great a distance from them as you can such as staying in a separate bedroom, and also wear a surgical mask if you have them - if no surgical mask then at least try to protect your coughs and sneezes from flying through the air infecting others by coughing/sneezing into a tissue(preferred), towel, or at the bare minimum your bent elbow.

Most people who catch this will be having mild symptoms and should be staying home and self-quarantining, not going to the doctor or anywhere else.

This advice is given as the best recommendation to limit the transmission of the virus to others to limit the overall severity of the outbreak in terms of pure numbers of infected and to reduce the burden on the health care system so the the most seriously ill can get proper treatment first and foremost.

First: I understand your point that sensationalism is not benefiting anyone. The last few pages have certainly devolved a bit and I am not trying to nitpick here.

With regards to the bold, my understanding is that basically all public gatherings are banned. So buildings like movie theaters, schools, churches, etc have a temporary emergency condition restricting access. Is this notliterallythe definition you posted?

Colloquially we use lockdown in a "no one goes anywhere" sense, and I agree that is NOT what Italy has imposed. But the current restriction on entering certain buildings and areas NATIONWIDE, is unprecedented in modern times. Downplaying the significance of these actions does not serve the greater good.

For example, when China started taking these actions, we played the same game of semantics. The travel restrictions were not uniform in every city and province. When statements like "400 million people are on lockdown" were made, the result was squabbling about the definition of lockdown. Isn't this missing the forest for the trees? The significant information was the breadth and impact of the travel restrictions. It seems like we downplayed it then and as a result no one took it seriously and kept on flying to hot zones and spreading this far and wide.

Being semantically correct is important, yes. But so is calling this for what it is, a nationwide lockdown of non essential travel and congregation.
We are all gunna make it

Where is the mis information?

Just because you decide it does not classify as lockdown does not make it fact.

The point still stands that the Italians banning public gatherings, cancelling major sporting events and telling everyone to stay home is going to fk up their economy.

They are not going to take those measures for just the flu

Lol at donkeys still saying this is nothing...keep telling yourself its nothin....hopefully itll hit the idiots and let nature take its course "darwin"

Thr entire globe shouldve shutdown all ports, airports, border crossings, train tracks

Marshal law thrown globally for two to four weeks,no work,no schools,no outings

But nooooo.... all the idiots kept comparing your normal flu to the corona without taking ratio into consideration

Unless a vaccine is discovered in the next 2 weeks..... world wide quarentine gets into effect starting yesterday.... we will see a blow up that has never been seen before..

We will have two scenarios...one is far fetched.. but a possibility

1) Mark my words..... in the next 2 or 3weeks this virus will mutate into something else, stronger more aggressive thatll make the current corona look like a walk in the park

2)Conspiracy theory tin foil hat : something is gonna happen, something big, topple the chinese/russian/iranian regime.. a race/economy/demographic/chunk of humans will disappear.... .only when one or more of the above happens....the virus will disappear " miraculously"

This is a good post, and I appreciate the effort in trying to bring back the thread from the previous couple of pages of the same old trolls trying to derail the thread on purpose. Would rep, but on recharge.

To other posters, if you see me ignore you, try looking for my reply in the correct place ( the tinfoil thread ).

The intent is that this thread is not:

1) Daily "New case in XYZ country" updates
2) Not purely speculative/conspiracy based

So basically we have been told that if we want to post purely speculative content in this thread, it needs to have some kind of source as a basis.

The worse thing this virus has done is shown how self centred people are.

The elderly and sick are very vulnerable to this, the least you could do is to try avoid catching it and spreading it to look out for them. Follow protocols by experts

But the narrative goes if it doesn’t affect me then who cares.

I’m sure they will all cry at their grandparents funeral or the guy who was winning his battle with cancer only to do die of a virus spread through negligence

Is there any data on infection rate? Like for every 100 people who come into contact with the virus, am estimated X number are infected.

I think the short answer to the question you are asking is close to 100%. I don't think anyone has any immunity whatsoever. If by contact you mean "virus particles enter a mucus membrane" then I have seen nothing to suggest you WOULDN'T become infected.

There is the Basic Reproductive Number. Basically the number of people who you will give an infection to if you yourself are infected, on average. This number is highy dependent on the host community and therefore variable from nation to nation, community to community, or timeframe. I.e. later in an outbreak, increased awareness and social distancing will reduce this number. I've seen numerous reported values ranging from 2-6, but most have been in the 3's.

You can also look at the doubling rate, which appears to be between 3 and 5 days. I.e. the number of infections in a given area double every 5 days or so.

In China it was 20%, in SK their healthcare director said roughly 10% were admitted.

The US national hospital association’s “best guess” of 5% of infected people if uncontained is 4.8m hospital admission in the US at peak time. And 1.9m ICU cases.

For reference we have 900k hospital beds total in the US and 100k ICU beds.

Not really. Hong Kong, Taiwan hardly get any. India which is a cesspool hardly has any. We were sitting on 13 here in LA for a week, and added 1 today. Meanwhile Italy has it going off left & right.

They're trying to prevent panic. In reality, there's nothing practical you can do besides isolate yourself.

Reposting in this thread for serious advice.

Will a mask alone protect me from catching this? Once I start my new job, I'm gonna be flying mon-thurs every week. Need some disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer but chit is sold out everywhere.

No. That's not the correct advice.

The official advice from the CDC and WHO for most people and which I fully agree with is:

If you are under 65 and have no serious chronic health conditions: Stay home if you're sick and your symptoms are mild and you can safely manage your own symptoms at home.

If you are over 65 and/or have serious chronic health conditions:

Agreed. I like Bernie, but he's wrong in this instance. This is a good post.

Better put on unvented goggles, too.

People who died of COVID-19 in Chinese hospitals had an average stay of 18 days. People who survived stayed 22 days. That's pretty rough.

I'm increasingly convinced these people would write the same chit if this was the Spanish Flu.

Dude. They are alarmed. The medical professionals are not just saying "wash your hands". The mayor of New York is admitting it's possible he will have to resort to closing the city.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

Mask alone will not protect you. As mentioned above eyes are a risk vector as well. If you absolutely can not find hand sanitizer by then, take comfort in the fact that touching an infected surface alone will not get you infected. It is then touching your eyes, mouth, nose, etc that gets you infected. If you wear a mask and goggles and DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE, plain old soap and water when you land will clean your hands.

If you can find it you want a NIOSH N95 mask not just a dusk mask/surgical mask. You could also go the route of wearing nitrile gloves but again it’s important you DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE. Realize this is borderline impossible. If you can’t find an N95 mask, a dusk mask will help you not touch your mouth and nose, and goggles the same for your eyes. If you are strict about that, you just need to be sure you take off the mask properly, same for goggles, then wash hands thoroughly. Otherwise you risk getting infected from the outside of the mask/gloves.

Basically the virus will only infect you if it reaches a mucus membrane. It’s not going to be absorbed through your skin.

Edit: Don’t forget all the things you touched will need to be disinfected too. Headphones, phone, laptop, book, etc. Just because you wear PPE and wash your hands does not mean you haven’t transferred virus particles to your belongings for future infection gains.
