Stupid draconian measures that spread even more unnecessary panic.
Governments suck.

Italy.
population 62 million
demographic
65 years and over: 20.2%
~12.4 million at greatest risk of death
if 3% die that's ~372,000
they really had no choice.
for comparison US 65 years and older 12.5 percent of total population

Why are you people trying to make this into the end of the world. It's not, we just need to follow the steps we're asked to

You can say I have a decent idea of what I'm talking about.
It's not the end of the ****ing world, but it's also not benign. There is a gray area, and humans in general are bad at dealing with grey areas. But people need to a grow a pair, pull their heads out of the sand and face the facts.
I would agree with tuning out MSM, and to be quite honest, Trump as well because he's saying a lot of nonsense about COVID-19.

Problem is we have don't have a good idea how many people are infected in the US because the government dropped the ****ing ball. Some US hospitals may still not have the test required to diagnosed SARS-CoV-2. Mine has been able to start testing yesterday.
As of now, my hospital's surgical ICU has been converted to another isolation unit because all the other ones in the hospital are full.

Overall its a pretty good social experiment. People in todays age want to panic/quarantine/shut it all down as opposed to doing the first steps such as hygiene and being responsible.
The reaction to the virus is worse than the actual virus.
Can you imagine if the governments were actually worried to a significant degree? Like if it was an actual killer. Airports would be shut down etc hazmat on borders.
Its a tricky thing now. Im not saying i know all the answers. At least Italy went full on so fair credit to them. No point stopping a sporting event but having trains and subways fully operational. We will also get a feel of prognosis as well in true numbers as i think China is skewed numbers a bit.
People think the uk health system will collapse lol. Every winter its on the verge of collapse. Brb shut it all down. All 50million for 300 cases. There needs to be some proper organization.

But I think its important to look at the big picture. Right now CDC is only recommending these actions for this section of the populous, but the CDC recommendation isn't the only data point. All of Italy was just locked down, China has been all sorts of jacked up for weeks now, and its becoming apparent that a good portion of the US population is totally apathetic to this threat and probably still not washing their hands after taking a dump. So does it make sense to wait for the CDC to say "EVERYBODY LISTEN UP, NOW is the time to go buy some food and supplies?" To run out with everyone else and queue up and rub elbows to fight over that last bag of rice or that last pack of TP? Personally I'd rather be prepared and not be a part of that panic.
Thank you, that is consistent with what I've heard.
Fairly confident no one in this thread has said "prepare for the end" in this thread. Some people certainly prepare for less likely scenarios than others. But right now the idea of needing to have a few weeks of food and supplies on hand is not a "low probability event".
EDIT:
As far as I can tell, the "low risk population" is not just roses and sunshine. There are certainly reports of some people having very mild SYMPTOMS, but from what I've read, the definition of "Mild" in a clinical sense is more like "did not require hospitalization". You are not irrational for wanting to avoid an illness that is potentially a couple weeks or more of flu like symptoms, even if death is unlikely.

It's the uncertainty that bugs us all. This is a novel infection in humans, and we don't have a full grasp of how bad it will be just yet. Everyone's risk-benefit assessment will be slightly different, and there will be an uncertainty to that well.
The uncertainty is the worst part of all of this, to be honest.

Definition of lockdown
1: the confinement of prisoners to their cells for all or most of the day as a temporary security measure
2: an emergency measure or condition in which people are temporarily prevented from entering or leaving a restricted area or building (such as a school) during a threat of danger
And the examples given by Merriam Webster are even applicable:
"At the outbreak's epicenter in the central province of Hubei, cities with a combined population of more than 60 million have been placed under lockdown, with outbound transportation halted and virtually all public activities suspended.
— Yanan Wang, Anchorage Daily News, "China reports major drop in new virus cases, 143 new deaths," 15 Feb. 2020"
Wuhan ( not the entire province of Hubei ) is under lockdown. Italy isnotunder lockdown.
"The government has said only those with a valid work or family reason that cannot be postponed will be permitted to travel.
Passengers departing on flights, except temporary visitors, will have to justify themselves, as will all those arriving by plane.
There are controls at train stations to check temperatures."
Are there travel restrictions in place? Yes.
Is the country under lockdown? No.
( I realize the article used the words "lockdown" and "quarantine", but neither is in place now in Italy ).

There are miscers loling in threads about going on vacation. Travelling for pleasure overseas, rather than business, despite an entire country just quarantining itself.
I don't think it's the "Lol, I'm going on holiday" crowd who are calling for heavily infected cities/ares to be on lockdown. It's probably the handwashers, and preppers.
The reaction to the virus is worse than the actual virus.
If China (if the official stats are to believed) and South Korea didn't take the measures that they did, the rate of infection would undoubtedly be higher.A lot of people seem to be confusing cause and effect. They see the figures going down in China and South Korea, and then seem to (falsely) conclude that the extreme measures played no part, the rate of infection didn't just spontaneously slow down.

Nothing could be greater evidence of my theory that the denialism consists entirely of people who are ready to completely mentally break if they have to deal with a moderately uncomfortable reality.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

Edit : I would like to believe that the misc can generally self moderate themselves to the point where the chitposting ( not talking about the quoted post, just in general ), is contained to the chitposting thread. The last two pages of so of this thread is mostly slinging insults, strawman arguments, and cliche keywords around. I would like to think we can actually be better than that.
