The best mod you can do to imho. is buy ear plugs, + a good helmet, and throw in a Sena SMH10R system in it. you can now listen to music, take or make phone calls, run gps and waze police app/traffic app all at same time while you ride (assuming you have unlimited data on phone) but still. can use downloaded music instead of streaming. Good helmet, 200 bucks or so + 150 for Sena SMH10R.

I can't ride without music now. Been riding with it for years. Ear buds take away all the wind noise, but you still hear everything around you. Wind=damages your hearing. I personally buy these.

If your purpose is learning how to wrench on your bike and not just bolt on squid mods then buy a factory service manual, do a basic tear down and put it back together again. It gives you an opportunity to anti-seize, grease or thread lock all your bolts and gets you started with some of the tools/knowledge to work on other bikes down the road.

Brb buying mods to teach me the basics of riding. If you want to get familiar with bikes then get on a damn bike.

Have said numerous times part of my desire to upgrade parts is to become more comfortable with the mechanical aspects of the bike, not how to ride it, you potato.

Upgraded sprockets, minor suspension upgrades, things of that nature.

The mirrors work better on opposite sides so they are upside down. Sounds dumb, works great!
Also that bike will benefit alot from upgrading rear shock and putting valve emulators in front tubes.

Just be careful. I was going to buy one this year as well. Chose not to, month after my buddy got into an accident, lost his left arm and almost lost his right leg. He's younger than me and has been riding a year now. Remember it doesn't matter how good you ride it matters how dumb the drivers are around you. So always be absolutely aware of your surroundings

I respectfully disagree. I have lost a lot of friends, and when I am driving i've seen bike wrecks. 99% of the wrecks ive seen have been avoidable, they don't give themselves reaction times, following too close, or they are riding in danger zones. I always give myself and escape route when riding. If theres 3 lanes, why stay behind a car if there is an open lane? people do it. I will go between cars, down shoulders, Idgaf. I consider these options when riding, most people do not. They act like they are in a car, and you can and will die. Thing is. sport bikes, and his 250 stop faster, and are more nimble than cars. Theres truly no excuse why you cant dodge a damn car unless you are straight tboned at an intersection.

Defensive riding, that is all it is. It is acquired in due time, complacency kills. Most wrecks happens within miles of their home. They let their guard up because they ride it everyday. I always head check when passing and changing lanes etc.. motorcycle safety course is fun, cheap where I live 50 bucks, i did a few of them for fun with some friends who wanted to learn. + discounts on your insurance. I pay 150 bucks for all 4 of my motorcycles a year. (liability, uninsured, underinsured and towing) i dont carry full coverage because they jack those premiums up to 2k+ i'd rather just buy a new bike every 2 years if I wrecked them.

It sucks though. I've seen really good people get killed just for not being defensive. I actually encourage new riders to ride with me on the road to learn my habits right off the start. I've taught several riders and they are riding well. Goodluck FNCK


Buy yourself a QUALITY set of stands. Not those 50 buck stands. I have matching woodcraft front triple tree stand (cost 130-140) and the tip for your bike model, they range like 10 bucks, so you can have multiple tips and use on multiple bikes. and a rear spool stand, (spools are the way to go) dont use swing arm stands. People love pitbull etc. I just love woodcraft, all my parts on my track bikes are woodcraft and street bikes and they treat me great. Don't get me wrong, im sure the 80 dollar sets will work, but spend 180 on pitbull or woodcraft and you have stands for life with no worries of bike falling off when you lift them for winter.


In winter I keep them on stands to prevent flat spots on the tires.

In future, learn how to ride well, safe. Ride at own pace, screw everyone else. Never try and keep up when you upgrade to a 600 or whatever you choose. I highly recommend a track day in your future, you will get years of experience in just a day of riding and learn how to handle your bike. (srs) Its addicting so be careful. I have full set of leathers for spring / fall. In summer I either wear no jacket, lol. or a mesh dainese. We all gauge our own risk assesments.

I beat the teachings of 'SIPDE' into my head so much that first year of bike ownership. I practiced it constantly whether I was on my bike, in my car or even riding with others just to get it down. I bought my first street bike at 26 and already had a wife and kids to think of. My wife was pissed in the first place so the last thing I wanted to do was kill myself!

As others have said don't put money into a 250 just lol. I bought an R6 as my first bike 2 years ago and still have it to this day. IMO a 600 is the perfect combo of light/nimble and still fast and fun. DOn't get a 250 srs.

I just bought my 2nd motorcycle a few days ago, it's a little Honda 250 cruiser for cruising around town with the GF, taking it sight seeing in the Kentucky Mountains next weekend. Bottom line is I have a 250 for when I am intentionally wanting to go slow and relax, and a 600 for when I want to risk my own life. Having only a 250 will be a joke srs

mmm can't argue hard data. I just feel like when proplerly using both brakes, we stop instantly. I guess I assume since our bikes weigh like 400 lbs vs a 4000lb car. thanks for correcting I guess. I still weave around obstacles and give enough distance to react.

Yah the studies all take average stop distance with abs and non abs bikes. The pro guys can stop faster with non abs but its hit or miss.

a lot of fun can be had on a 250.

There are a few cheap mods like heated grips. Better mirrors as stock mirrors are mostly garbage. A double bubble screen for reduced wind resistance.

Chain/disc lock.

Spend money on Gear. Textiles are better for road use.

To be honest the mods on a motorbike depends on what you intend to use it for. Commute, general riding, track etc..

Get a pair of riding boots. I use these.- SO COMFORTABLE. Its like a sneaker, but it covers the ankle and has tons of protection, i've wrecked twice in them and I am up and well (stunting and such) just scuffed a little. Yeah its a little pricy, but consider how many shoes you'll burn thru and these are just boss. Highly recommended and they are stylish too. Can commute, and walk around without looking like power ranger in malls etc.

I live in a really small, congested place, so everyone around here drives a Scooter :P .... Will hopefully get my first scooter/bike soon (already in the middle of getting my license) .. Looking to get a 125 engine one loool ... But eventually down the road get myself a PCX 150. Something like 250 here would be impossible to drive or even get top speed given the speed limit is 30kmph.

Even though cars can stop faster under test conditions ive found in real life applications its the opposite.

Guys on bikes are always focused on riding and guys in cars are usually chatting texting radio gps etc so the initial response time for bikes is much lower in my opinion. Which makes the cars stopping time and stopping distance higher than what it could be in a focused test.

Also car drivers like to cruise to a stop. A reaction that they sometimes hold onto when schit goes down. Ive seen a lot of accidents where the car driver just under braked and slowed down slightly before plowing into something.

Also car drivers tend to react by swerving sometimes whereas bike riders do it differently. A bike rider knows if he swerves and hits something hes fuked. But a car can swerve knowing they might hit something but they will prob be ok. Except ive seen many times a car approaching a hazard, tries to swerve into another lane and sees a car or van etc and swerves but into his lane but all that time was slowing down.

Also car drivers are more likely to neglect their brakes than a bike. We cant assume every car has perfect brake pads and rotors and everything.

Also we are not considering the highly likely chance of extra weight from passengers and other luggage. Most people got a boot full of schit they just lug around everywhere. Add that and a few people its a lot of extra mass.

So in real life applications i would say bikes actually DO slow down faster than cars. But this is obviously not on paper. Just from my experience on the road.

Not to mention the age restrictions + the fact you have to learn on a 500cc.

great choice for a first bike. great to learn on, very fun winding through the gears and not winding up at over 100mph. They also hold their value well.

I would add a tank bag. That should be easily swapped to any other bike you get in the future.

Picked it up this morning. Going to do some basic maintenance and some repairs/mods/upgrades on my next day off.

I do have one immediate concern though. The bike runs fine, but only with full choke. It won't start or idle with anything less than 90% choke. It does continue to run if I turn it off while riding, but it stalls if I press the clutch and don't switch gears fast enough.


Dirty carbs or something else? Going to try to run some seafoam through it tonight, see if that does anything.

Dirty carbs would be my first guess or old fuel.

Could be.
Or old fuel if it was sitting around a lot time.
Or old dirty air filter
Or loads of other stuff.

If you buy a 250 I promise you will come back to this thread in 3 months complaining how the Mopeds are passing you on the highway.

Take an advanced riders course as well, I learned a lot form it.

Even if I do want to upgrade, I'll just sell it. I got it for a great deal, I could probably flip it now and make a couple hundred profit.
