We are no longer a manufacturing economy. Rather, we're an information and innovation economy. So you gotta have at least a college degree to participate. If you want the 60s back, move overseas where all the manufacturing jobs are going.

GO Bill made college affordable to the non rich person. Before that it was almost impossible to afford college especially on the heels of the Great Depression and WW2

Technology came along and replaced many of the manual labor jobs that could be automated. Now you have to learn to design the machine while other tradies learn to repair it when it needs maintenance.

The world is more complicated and we have a MUCH higher standard of living now compared to 50 years ago. Standard of living requires more income.

Its not necessary. Universities are a business much like Walmart/Best Buy/Target. If going college was a must, it would be free and part of the K-12 educational system. Youre brainwashed into going to college your whole childhood as well as your parents who got brainwashed the same way.

Its all about who you know these days. Networking is absolutely everything. Location is everything. Being a proven employee is everything. People who are capable of doing well on tests in a sheltered environment means jack**** in the real world.

Basically college is like that service that gives you a trial period(K-12 grade), They try to convince you need this service via marketing and advertising. Then they rip it away from you and expect you to sign up for the service because you were brainwashed into thinking it made your life better and you need it. When in reality, It was nothing but an illusion.

What a lot of you fail to understand is that "growing up" 15-20 years ago meant you lived in a different world. The opportunity potential for someone coming out of college at that time was significantly greater than that of someone who did not attend college. Sure, you could look to guys like Dave Thomas and everything as people who didn't and still "made it", but there was also a heavy dose of recognition that these people were outliers to the norm.

The "you need to go to college" argument existed for many of us growing up because our parents understood that the economic landscape at the time favored those who had degrees vs those without.

As time went on into the modern era, however, the advents of technology and new markets/industries as well as an exponential increase in innovation now means that college is no longer an essential for one to have a middle-upper class quality of life

I can agree with the above sentence. Colleges provide jobs for not only professors but also textbook publishers, think tanks, administrators (i.e. paperwork people at Registrars and Financial Aid offices), security guards, and janitors, etc.

Without colleges, publishing firms have no buyers for their latest revision of Romeo and Juliet.

I quit before graduating and am doing a hell of a lot better than many of my friends who did graduate.

I agree somewhat. Colleges are pumping out programs tailored around buzzwords. 1000's of data science ms programs have flooded in students who read about average salaries online. By the time you hear about something booming, its too late.

These Indians, Europeans and even Africans aren't coming over to the USA with useless liberal arts degrees. Many foreign Universities have been certified thus these people migrate to the USA and fight for high paying jobs

- Cost of living has gone up, minimum jobs are not enough to support households
- Population is growing, more competition
- Corporations allow people to monopolize the capitalist market, businesses are more controlled with less job opportunities for people
- The education system is outdated and failing, college has become more accessible

Too scared to be in debt, even when I was 18.

The thought of being in debt led me to be a smart worker (not necessarily a hard worker) and it pushed me to be better than my peers with degrees

got more raises and promotions than my peers with degrees/debt

got a new job doing pretty well for myself

fuk going to some big ass university and acquiring 100,000 dollars of debt just lmao

Because the world is a lot more competitive now. This is especially true now that we have internet applications for jobs. It's the most effective way to narrow down job searches.

-You run a really good company that everyone wants to work for
-You get 300 applications for every open position
-There's no way anyone can go through all these
-Tell your computer to automatically reject everyone who doesn't have a bachelor's
-That brings it down to 150
-Reject everyone who doesn't have a 3.0 GPA
-That brings it to 50
-Reject everyone who doesn't have internship experience
-Down to 25
-Reject everyone who doesn't have TWO internships
-Down to 10 resumes to look over
-Now this is manageable





-But then your old college frat bro tells you his son needs a job
-You hire him instead and throw the 10 resumes in the garbage

It's impossible to compare 2016 to the 20-25 post WWII years. It's a completely different world now.

I still believe college is the best investment you can make. Just don't major in women's studies / underwater basket weaving / or something like that.

And I'm aware of student loans. I paid mine off last year and made a post about here on the MISC. You can easily pay it off in under 10 years if you choose a field of study that is high in demand and then know how to budget your finances and are frugal.
