Also, the researchers suggested asocial rather than biological basis for the behavior.Because regular stick-carrying hasnโ€™t been reported in other wild chimpanzee communities, they proposed that that young Kanyawara chimpanzees may be learning the behavior from each other as a way of practicing for adult roles โ€“ a form of social tradition passed between juveniles previously described only in humans.
His point is null because a study done shortly after the one he mentioned directly contradicted the findings.
Let's also mention the fact that the chimpanzee study was conducted with respect to HUMAN social meanings attached to the objects. The chimpanzees don't know what they're actually doing, as they aren't socialized into human culture, and haven't established masculine/feminine traits and attached them to objects with regard to their own race.

WE view trucks as masculine, and dolls as feminine. THEY don't. In their culture, the inverse could very well be true, and trucks could be viewed as feminine, and dolls viewed as masculine. The study is a croc of chit. The poster mentioning the study has a very ethnocentric view of the world.

tldr;
the first study is still introducing arbitrary and artificial human meaning into objects, and placing the monkeys in a context filled with human meaning

I'm well aware of the differences of the terms. I refuse to differentiate them because 99.7% of those who are biologically male or female adhere to the corresponding gender identity. I will not object to someone changing their sex after X age, but I do not agree with it. The recent publication of the transgendered 9 year old on the cover of NatGeo is just how deluded society has become. It's nothing short of child abuse.

You can't make a generalization if it isn't completely true. Gender is not synonymous with sex. Gender is socially constructed, sex is biologically constructed. The .3% of people (which is a lot, assuming that your statistic is true) would likely disagree with you.

I will call someone sir, ma'am, male or female based off of their appearance. As I said with the whole bathroom ordeal earlier in the year: if you look like a man, use the men's restroom.

These gender pronoun rules going into effect in Canada are ****ing ridiculous. I sure as hell hope this isn't coming to America.

I agree with you... but gender is still socially constructed, and not synonymous with biological sex.

A lot of people who haven't taken any social science courses seem to struggle with this basic concept.

Edit: as expect, most people are confusing sex with gender.
Anyone who has taken a basic sociology survey class, which is practically everyone who went to college, is familiar with this concept. It doesn't meant that it's a concept worth taking seriously. Get out of here with that Judith Butlet bull****.

The problem with the social "sciences" is that they do not see (more like refuse to see) that there is a relation between out behavior and basic biology. It's why it's getting increasingly difficult to take them seriously. Our gender roles may be socially constructed (pants being masculine is rather arbitrary, for instance), but they are generally certainly a product of both our biology and our environment, the same as with any animal behavior. We're no different. That there is some divide between sex and "gender" is about as ridiculous a concept as the mind/body duality, which most would agree is an outdated and scientifically unsound philosophical idea. This isn't like race, where the biologically differences don't really go beyond phenotype.

Anyways, when a sociology student is talking about all this gender nonsense going out of control, you know that things are bad.

Ummm, no? I took a Cultural Diversity class with this subject being one of my biggest takeaways (one of my fav classes btw, it really was an eye opener). Basically, gender being a social construct can be explained through how pink used to be a boys color and how blue used to be a girls color.

but outta curiousity; would you tell someone with body dysmorphia who thinks theyre fat, that they should stop eating? Obviously not.

So why in the **** do you tell someone with body dysmorphia who thinks theyre the opposite sex that they should cut their dink off?

"gender is a social construct" is thrown around alot by you ****tards, and usually follows an explanation such as sex is biological but gender is a social construct and they should choose their own gender.

Which again leads me to ask "why in the fuk do you encourage these people to cut their dinks off" Theior dink is not a social construct. its biological.

its sad that a NOV 2016 join date is taking you to the cleaners OP.

Men are the "hunter and gatherers" of the family unit because they were stronger than women and able to hunt more efficiently and were more successful on their hunts.

This is due to a hormone known as testosterone.

Upon civilization, buildings needed to be built. Once again the men were the builders, due to that same little hormone called testosterone.

Does it really surprise you that men with high testosterone are naturally drawn to things their ancestors did for biological reasons? Or is that also "social construct"

A lot of social scientists are pretty dedicated to denying any relation between behavior and biology, particularly in regards to gender. It's been too heavily politicized. Sort of like climate change denial from the right.

what? gender = sex. but when butt hurt liberals get upset, they immediately go to changing definitions to fit pacify them. They definition was changed to let homos get married but not when the mormoms wanted their polygamy legalized

Gender isnot a social construct for the most part. "Gender" is different from "sex", this is true. "Gender" describes differences between the sexes, and is almost entirely biologically constructed. Gender walls developed through measurable differences and behaviors between the sexes. Differences between sexes are a result of biological inclinations - they are caused by hormonal, genetic, and neurological differences between the sexes. Men aren't more aggressive than women because society tells them to be - it's mostly biological. Our brains are structured differently. Same thing seen in all species of animals. Gender roles exist in the animal kingdom regardless of having a society. Female kangaroos and male seahorses don't carry the babies because society tells them to - it's a difference between the sexes that is based in biology.

The only thing that is a social construct is certain aspects of expectations for how genders should act. It is a social construct to say that women have to wear dresses, but to say that gender itself is a social construct is wrong. The differences between the sexes are far more substantial than just "what society tells us".
