Never understood why ppl did it to begin with
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

If you have any issues with your elbows suicide grip reduces or eliminates it in comparison to the normal grip.

is it bad that I use suicide grip for OHP? What if I start using straps when doing OHP's? Just seem much stronger. Wouldn't ever use it for bench though.

I've been doing false grip for about a year and a half, maybe two years. It's actually more stable for me than regular.
I had to switch to regular grip for competition and def lift less.

I have my thumbs under the bar, and I've never lost control, but if I could also wrap it around mid rep if I needed to because of that

I've used suicide grip for ohp. No safety issue here. And it's easier on your wrists too it seems

Your last ditch safety maneuver in a squat is to dump the bar off your back and jump out of the way, so no. Also your hands don't contribute that much to actually keeping the bar on your shoulders for high bar.

On a related note, I was having some elbow issues ramping up with a smolov routine years ago and switched to suicide grip for squats and it fixed it. Been doing suicide for squats ever since with zero issues and even improved performance. Suicide grip for bench is still retarded and I would never do it though.

for anyone wondering why people use suicide grip:

not using the thumbs will engage the forearm less. And so with the same weight, the triceps/chest/front delt will be more engaged.

Most of the clips I've seen have spotters on both sides, but +315lbs slipping and falling in a fraction of a second, they don't have time to react before it does its damage.

Not sure what suicide grip is.

i always thought suicide grip on the bench was a reverse grip?

this is just thumbless - i do it all the time on a lot of exercises, probably do it on bench too sometimes.

I use suicide grip for all my OHP press sets and used to use it all the time for bench press. Normal grip for OHP just feels extremely unnatural and a lot weaker. But after seeing the result I think its probably not a good idea. That weight drops faster than your reaction time and you'd be paralyzed doing OHP
Pretty sure straps would only keep the bar from rolling backwards towards your head, which it wouldn't anyways since your fingers are around it. Don't see how they would keep it from rolling forwards, which is how things go wrong with suicide grip.

Considering that the forearms play no role in actually propelling the weight upward, I don't see how that would be the case boyo. Not saying a suicide grip wouldn't change muscle activation patterns or whatever a little (would prob be negligible and only make a difference at lower loads if anything, would be my guess), but I don't see how it would engage the tris/chest/front delt more, like you said.

Switched to suicide grip when I had tendinitis in my wrist and it took the pressure off of them. Always thought to myself how this grip was bad and that I was confident whenever I held the bar that it wouldn't slip out...Now this video is giving me second thoughts

This is a good post, you should never use a suicide grip whether it's bench, or fapping, because lets face it, you can't fap with a false grip and also if you use a false grip and the bar rolls, you will be injured.

I'll agree it's dangerous, but it's the only grip I ever used (20+ years). Maxed at 315x2 and when I rode the bike, 420.
Wrapping my thumb around the bar is uncomfortable for me, and always felt unnatural.
Quit lifting quite awhile ago though, so don't have to worry about it.

I rarely bb bench coz of shoulder issues, but if i do I only suicide grip coz it feels better.

Thanks for the warning OP, however I will carry on.

(also to the analogies of drink driving- plenty of people die crossing a road every day, should we stop crossing roads?)

Never use it, as I had read how dangerous it could be a few years ago. Surprised at how many people still do it. Thanks for the reminder op, you might have saved a life someday with this thread.

Stop crossing roads? people have died from food poisoning, should people stop eating? herpderp
Driving itself kills people every day. Drunk driving was a good analogy, I dont see how you fail to understand it.
