I've seen too many people give up on what they're passionate about because they were afraid they couldn't make enough money doing it to be happy.
its funny. i've done a lot of research into this

and im still baffled at how this is positive.

this is the same chit people that take psychedlics/ drugs/ buddhism/ eastern philosophy preach and i once again dont understand how its positive

studies show that it LITERALLY is that of an infants brain
"It took a while, but scientists have finally imaged the brains of people on LSD — a psychedelic used recreationally by millions, but whose therapeutic potential is only recently beginning to be recognized. Judging from the scans, it seems like Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) “completes the brain”. Essentially, the brain functions less like a compartmentalized entity and more like a whole, very much akin to how the brain of a baby works.

In the adult brain, each function is specialized and corresponds to a particular area of the brain. The visual cortex controls vision, the auditory cortex processes hearing, the motor cortex is for movement and so on. Well, it seems that when high on LSD this division of labor breaks down, giving rise to a more unified system. This is what the so-called “dissolution of the ego” might look like.

A particular network in the brain responsible for self-awareness, the parahippocampus and retrosplenial cortex, experience declined connectivity on LSD. This is what the so-called “dissolution of the ego” might look like — the disintegration of the self while still being aware.

“In many ways, the brain in the LSD state resembles the state our brains were in when we were infants: free and unconstrained,” said Robin Cahart-Harris, who led the study. “This also makes sense when we consider the hyper-emotional and imaginative nature of an infant’s mind.”

For instance, scientists found that many brain areas, not just the visual cortex, contributed to processing sight. This might explain the intense and vivid hallucinations LSD users report.

The researchers from the Imperial College London say that this brain unification might also have something to do with the long-lasting “wellbeing” effects users experience post-LSD trip. It’s only recently that researchers have been allowed to work with LSD after it was criminalized all over the world in the 1970s. Evidence suggests that classical psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD could be a way to soothe anxiety in the terminally ill, treat alcoholism and more.

“For the first time, we can really see what’s happening in the brain during the psychedelic state, and can better understand why LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) had such a profound impact on self-awareness,” said David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology who worked with Carhart-Harris.

“This could have great implications for psychiatry.”

The study published in PNAS was carried out on 20 healthy volunteers who received either a 75 micrograms dose of LSD or a placebo. They had their brains scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG).

“This, for human neuroscience, is the same as the Higgs boson,” Nutt says.

“This is a milestone study,” says Matthias Liechti, a drug researcher at the University of Basel, Switzerland. “It seems that research on LSD is making progress again despite regulatory and funding hurdles.”

The floodgates of psychedelic research are starting to open, and who knows what we might learn. Considering many psychedelics are used by millions each year, despite they’re illegal almost all over the world, the benefits of understanding their effects on the human body cannot be overstated.
“Consciousness research is a relatively young science,” Carhart-Harris told Gizmodo. “In terms of psychedelic research, brain imaging of psychedelics is still pretty embryonic. So in order for us to really understand these findings, we need to slot it in a network of understanding, and we don’t really have that network yet. We’ve got a treasure trove of data, and we’ve got the beginnings of an understanding of what all this means, but we’re still really only scratching the surface."
there are more studies like this. sorry, but i dont like feeling like an infant

Having self awareness and valuing our existence gives us an incentive to stay alive, thus increasing the likelihood we reproduce.

Do you honestly think you do anything out of pure unimpeded, unbiased abstract thought?

You can choose not to have children, but you still act in ways that would increase the likelihood of your childrens existence or survival.

Everyone, except a select few, have a sizable ego IMO. It's in our nature. The difference is how we carry ourselves. I think people irl would describe me as modest before they ever call me conceited, but that's just how I carry myself, I don't put my ego on display even though it's there. Maybe I'm wrong, but I assume that's the case with most "modest" people.

Now narcissism, that's what only a few people have, and while I would say it's more bad than good it definitely is not all bad. Like OP was saying in regards to ambition, I would say being a narcissist is almost a perquisite to having aspirations such as being the president of America (to think YOU are the 1 man out of 100+ million eligible participants to run the greatest country), and the president is the most prestigious position in the world. Of course all but a handful of people with such aspirations and high opinions of themselves end up falling way short of where they think they should be, and that's where the negatives come into play, notably depression. Not to mention their inability to truly connect with others.

Your statement about purpose is absolutely correct when applied to every organism except humans. We are the only species that we are aware of that have the ability to dream/envision and then mold reality around it. You're equating us simply to animals when we are many steps higher than that. There very fact that we are discussing it is testament to that. The very fact that men would give up their families, hop on a space craft, travel to the moon, with a high risk of death is testament to a higher purpose/meaning/value than just banging biches. If it was about banging biches those men wouldn't play Russian roulette with their lives. You don't see cheetahs attacking a pride of lions for meat. Humans on the other hand will do the craziest chit to find fulfillment and peace.

I've met a few people (not many) in my life that really have themselves together and have a child-like temperament. These people wake up every day no matter the circumstance and just love being alive and sharing it with other people.

You are one step behind brah, I wake up every day happy to be alive. The fact that we get to live is immeasurably amazing, however all the enjoyment we have comes from the manipulation of reward systems build into our brains, one's that exist to maximise our likelihood of continuing out genes.

Every base human desire exists to help us reproduce and ensure our offspring success

The desire for power, material possetions, sex, intimacy etc are easier to understand.

But imagination, the desire to solve problems, curiosity and others all exist for the same purpose, and look how well they have served us! If it weren't for these human qualities we would still be digging in diet.

Mice have been shown to be innately curious, yet we agree they are not sentiment or self aware.

The best we can do is accept that our entire biology is geared towards replication, but that we can Jedi mind trick these systems to maximise our enjoyment of life.

its horse chit social issues humans have created

your body is hard-wired to survive.

now, humans are also social so there is a component of the ego becoming too much.

whereby your ego is so sizable that you destroy everything around you; humans wouldn't and don't work that way.

but at the same time survival takes precedent.

foregoing your ego would be foregoing survival, and your body would fight with you 100% along the way.

well i was giving you an example of things talking about the dissolution of the ego, like this thread suggests.

buddhism is centered around dissolution of the ego
certain drugs are centered around dissolution of the ego

so i was stating that all of this ego talk, buddhism, and things of its ilk are related to that of an infants brain as purported and supported by that study

Again you're misunderstanding. Enjoying a challenge is not the same as doing a challenge to acquire money so then you can enjoy life. What you described with your kids is them enjoying the challenge for the sake of the challenge... something most adults do not do.

That simply isn't true. There is no organism on this planet other than humans that will risk their lives for fulfillment. Organisms will risk their lives for potential mates, current mates, or offspring. But humans are the only species that will risk their lives for fun, fulfillment, exploration, etc.

Like I said, we can manipulate and misuse the existing reward systems in our minds to find enjoyment/pleasure in our lives, and that is, imo, all there is to being happy.

Everyone sees enjoyment/happiness/existence as something abstract, I see it as chemicals.

Are you sure it's not your ego bitching at you that you have mental health problems, when you're actually fine? Are you able to let your doubts (ego) go, just sit and be grateful for how fukking insanely amazing being alive in this universe is? Genuinely wondering.

Also, problem solving and striving for success is not something you can thank your ego for. You can do that chit while being humble and loving life without cynicism, self doubt and harming others.

I honestly apologise if I'm not being clear, I'm on mobile and it's hard to write long chit coherently.
Chemicals and states that we as human adults can consciously control. No other animal that i've ever researched can do that.

You haven't said anything contradictory. I've pointed out things about our species that contradict your steadfast view. Someone in this thread mentioned Buddha. Well supposedly he gave up the life of a nobleman/prince/king and the ability to spread his seed Genghis Khan like... in order to find truth/clarity. There are plenty more people like that. It completely contradicts your view.

You can come back and try and say he did that after manipulating his chemicals or whatnot, but that just furthers the contradiction.

what would happen if nobody procreated though?

what would happen if you decided not to eat?

there are some "steadfast", objective views that ring true despite our feelings.

also, i hate to say it. and i personally dont like reading about it. but you prob have far less of a choice than you think- most of it being a byproduct of a system already set in place, whether it be genetics, brain connections, etc.

HOWEVER, a lot of psych can be misleading and not pinpointed. i personally can feel 100% in control at times and reading about that type of chit just makes me feel weird. thus, i stay away from it and at least appear to remain in control

Other animals do things supposedly purely for fun. Have you never seen a dog play? Are they controlling their brain?

We consciously affect our minds by manipulating the reward systems. Seemingly, so can dogs, are we more than them?

1) was Buddha a real person? I don't know honestly lol

2) its just a story pass rd down by word of mouth, did Jesus rise from the dead?

3) the manipulation of brain systems is not direct - look at porn, social media, problem solving games, all replace certain base needs with technology, this was not possible than

4) mentally ill people don't operate in the way that would be expected.

5) of you believe in evolution, what I say logically follows.

Can a dog write a symphony or paint a masterpiece? Can a dog envision flying and create a machine to make that possible? Can a dog contemplate its own existence? We are the ONLY species so far that we are aware of that can think of something that doesn't exist and then shape reality around that vision and bring it into existence.

We can directly manipulate our brain and our bodies. By consciously thinking about it we can slow our heart rate, calm anxiety, turn sadness into happiness, and hundreds of other things animals can't.

You make it seem like we have no choice and that we are bound by instinct and evolution... as if we are slaves to a bunch of random chemicals and atoms bouncing around in our bodies. It used to be thought that the 4 minute mile was impossible... then someone who believed it wasn't broke that barrier. Was it always in his DNA or did he shape reality to his vision? There is strong evidence that bacteria can almost consciously adapt its DNA to environmental changes. There is even stronger evidence that humans can shape their DNA just by thinking about it... willing it to happen... creating our own perceived stimuli about the reality around us.

Wrong. Elephants have painted stuff, and are able to recognise themselves in a mirror - hence are self aware, so are other animals.

Certain birds build elaborate displays of items to impress potential mates, who is to say art it any more than that?

Many animals have been shown to have culture they pass down through generations also.

Also other animals can envision and make tools, just because they are less complicated does not make them any less relevant. The conceptual step between using hands and using a rock is much bigger than the step between using a rock and a hammer.

Just because we can do these things does not make them any more than a way to more reliably continue out genetic lines.
