The rest of what you wrote is irrelevant. Survival favors the prepared, plan for the worst, hope for the best. If not one damn thing in the BOB helps a person in a given emergency, nothing lost. It it does, you may need it badly, and need it to survive. Or, it may simply make your experience less horrible until help arrives or you find help. Would you rather have something to sleep on, some water close by, a little food, and a radio with you until there's help for say 2-3 days or nothing?
This is not rocket science. Just basic survival info. There's a reason those who actually do that chit for a living always recommend a basic BOB. Always.

I agree having a BOB is great but can we agree that your disaster planning shouldn't begin there? You need to have the evacuation plans and means and you need to live in a home that can withstand the most threatening conditions prone to your geographic location. These weigh far more heavily on your survival than a BOB. It's nice to have that safety net if you happen to be in your home at the time of a disaster but it's not going to guarantee chit if you can't safely shelter in place because your dwelling is insufficient or you don't have the means to get the fuk out when you need to.

On topic, always a good idea to have something like that, along with a chunk of cash in your house in case of emergencies

Dude Idk, the bag you describe sounds so basic that I could literally put it together in five minutes in the event of an emergency. It takes practically zero thought to mentally locate within my house the bag, water jug, pb, protein, bread, first aid kit, flashlight, weapons etc that would be necessary. If the emergency is so severe that you have to get out of your house immediately, then I doubt you're going to survive anyway. Your example of leaving your house for the gas leak definitely didn't necessitate a BOB either; you could have stayed at a friend or relative's house, or a hotel, and you could have gotten food just about anywhere.
The only things I could see being useful and that would require advanced planning to obtain would be a gas mask, antibiotics, storm-proof matches, maybe a tent, guns, etc. Mostly I think that I'd be better off staying in my house/basement if some wacky **** (zombie apoc?) was going down, rather than exposing myself to a bunch of panicked and dangerous people. If it's a nuclear attack then we're all screwed, so nbd there.
If anything, the one sort of emergency that people should be encouraged to plan for, since it's much more likely to occur than what's being mentioned ITT, is a financial one. An emergency fund that can carry you for six months (or more) if you were suddenly unemployed would be the best thing for most people to concern themselves with.
I think making a mental note of the fire exits in any building that you're in might also fall higher on the list of priorities than what's being mentioned in here.

OK hear me out:
-So if "studies" show you should be prepared for 72 hours, basically all you need is shelter and water.
-In the event that you are 100% ON YOUR OWN (i.e. no hotels, no red cross shelters, no friends couch, no your house, etc.) then we're completely fuked. It means all grocery stores have been looted, the gov't is fuked and can't help the people and we have no power/water.
- To restore that will take MUCH longer than 72 hours.
So, instead of a dumb bag that'll let you live in the forest for a few days, I suggest stocking up on water/food/ guns at your house. In the case of an emergency where a city's water/ electricity gets cut off and the gov't can't help. You'll want to stay fuking put in your house instead of wander off and risk getting killed by the desperate, unprepared people.

When disaster hits or there's an imminent threat of disaster it's about making the right moves at the right time.
Look at statistics for large scale US disasters and Katrina is a good example. Who died? The elderly, due to their immobility. The poor due to their lack of resources. People with existing health conditions due to disruptions or inaccessibility to care. Young children/infants because they're incapable of caring for themselves in an emergency.
Simply by being in the right demographic improves your odds of survival far more than a BOB could. Then comes all the other stages of planning and prep before a BOB can even begin to influence your chance at survival.
Again, a BOB is great for convience and QOL improvement in a disaster, just less meaningful for survival than tons of other factors which need to be considered first.

I was trying to have a serious conversation, don't be a baby around me.
A BOB seems to be more along the lines of an outdoor survivalist bag, as opposed of something to be used in the case of an emergency at home.

I thought this was about a Big 'ol Boy. Having a big 'ol boy around can get you out of a lot of trouble.

That's funny op I needed mine once. Not fukin srs. Sitting in my home I hear loud bang bang on the door. I open it and it's a cop to tells me there was a gas pipe breach a few blocks over due to mistake during construction and I had to evacuate now. Like right now. I turned around and grabbed my car keys, phone and wallet and told the wife & kids to get in the car. He said they'd alert people when it was safe. Would that hours, days, more? I had no idea. Alert me how? I had no idea.
Went to the park to tire the kids out then we ended up going to Chipotle for dinner. I was thinking wtf am I going to do after this? So I had the kids look up a movie on my Fandango app. After the movie it was kind of late so we drove to a hotel with a pool and the kids swam in their underwear. Luckily, no massive explosion that took out my house. I didn't need anything other than what I carry every other day in my pocket.
Just lol at drinking old bottled water from your bob in the back of your suv.

Walk through the ghettos of Chicago right now with your side arm, holding a block of gold. Tell me if you survive.
