I lol at the fact that "How to win friends and influence people" always gets mentioned in these threads.

The book is basically an exercise handbook on how to be a disingenuous individual. Have met so many of these fake conniving types in the workplace.

Jetzt try to be a genuinely nice person and take a genuine interest in other people is a much better advice.

i've read it. and it really does teach you how to be manipulative lol. (SRS). smile at others? use their name often? remember that people always look at their own faces first in group photos, so this means people are always self-absorbed, so use this to your advantage by asking people questions and getting interested in them?

i did not even post my favorite book, only because of the thread title. because my favorite book did not change my outlook as a man, it changed my outlook as a PERSON. and that book is steven covey's: the 7 habbits of highly effective people. he calls out the techniques in books like 'how to win friends and influence people' as manipulative, because you are operating on an immature 'personality ethic'. but he also points out that these 'tricks and techniques do work', and that they are useful to know. but using them, without having a foundation built on the 'character' ethic will lead you nowhere.

there's a big difference between the 'personality' ethic, and the 'character' ethic. one is a requirement, the other is not. one is based on timeless principles, the other is based on the quick fix, or flavor of the month.

For me the book that helped me the most was Meditation by Marcus Aurelius but something a bit more original would be :The book of five rings by Miyamoto Musashi, The intro is more general, the rest of the book focuses on martial arts/ sword fighting but can be applied to pretty much anything. Another good book was the Art of War by Sun Tzu.

Tons of good books mentioned, I'll say Nietzsche again bc that guy changed my perspective on life in the biggest way.

A recent one that is a little more light hearted is Paddle your own Canoe by Nick Offerman. Seems like he's actually a genuine guy and while the book prob won't provide any big revelations, it still shows about the importance of gratitude and hard work. Would def recommend the audio book.

I won't deny that you can use the principles written in the book for gain. That is completely true. But what I valued the most in it were lessons of human nature and how to appeal to that nature.

Prior to reading it, I thought people would be receptive to criticism, especially if it were justified. I didn't know how useless debates and arguments would be in trying to convince people to your way of thinking. I learned a lot from the anecdotes within the book and it made me a "softer" person as a result. Ultimately that's what I believe this book was trying to achieve; an internal transformation of character rather than externally focused control of other people.

...also yeah, the 7 habits of highly effective people is a treasure of a book. I still need to finish it though

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. He's got a lot of Ayn Rand's ideas in there but I read it before I read any of her books.

It felt like a chore getting through it, thought it did have valuable information, I really couldnt apply much. It was simply too much information on a broad range of topics. I realized about halfway through that I should probably have been taking notes like it was a text book rather than some of the easier reading personal finance books where you come out of it with a pretty good synopsis from cover to cover.

The book does not teach you to be manipulative, unlike 48 laws of power. It just gives these principles and gives examples of them. That's it.

My takeaway was pretty much how to have a balanced retirement portfolio. However that you need to work with a Fiduciary Advisor to achieve it.

Thats why I was disappointed when I was done, I couldnt apply it without paying a stranger for help.

I just recently read 3 books on Theodore Roosevelt. That guy was a Christian Hippie Badass. He was born very sick and was skinny most of youth. Then he started lifting and did Boxing, Wrestling in which he held matches in the White House. He hunted Lions in Africa. He was kind of a cowboy in the midwest. He fell in love with the west so he helped the National Parks Services and started National Conservation. He had a total of 6 kids and his first wife unfortunately died due to a disease.
