This is the only downfall. Otherwise you'd have a brand new car, fully under warranty, that you get to just give back after the lease is up. Dropping 3K that you'll never see again sucks though.

If you lease a car always lease with zero money down/up front.

There's cars cheaper than $250 a month without putting any money down.

Damn dawg, you ever filled out a W2 or paid taxes?

I didn't say buy out the vehicle, I said you can pay the depreciated value of the vehicle in one payment and not have a "debt."

With leasing, price is only relevant to residual value.

If you can't afford a lease "debt" then you sure as chit can't afford a car loan either.

I mean leasing a car > running to work/the gym/boxing practice and back

I know exactly which one I'm not doing again. What's smart is not always practical depending based on your financial capabilities. What you value is really what determines what is and isn't a smart choice, in this case, our values do not align.

You are the 30k/yr earner advocating for paying for a car in cash when you could easily use that money for a number of other things to better result. Thats a broke mindset.

Yeah brah it doesn't worth the money
I earned $30k fresh out of college in 2011.
I would have suicided already if I was still making that money.

And yes, the majority of the country should be driving used base model civics for like $6k

My wife bought a used 2008 mazda3 with 130k miles in 2015 for $6k, no power locks, roll up windows, standard, up until last year when she moved into a higher paying position and sold it to my uncle who needed a beater. But the thing was reliable, great on gas, didnt break, was paid off before we drove it off the lot, and wasnt debted to a piece of metal.

Considering the average American has <$1k saved up, and $6,375 in credit card debt, I'd say they should be riding bikes, not cars.

The only way you don't lose money on a car is if you get a good deal on a used vehicle and it either doesn't depreciate much more. Or you buy a used exotic/rare and it appreciates.

You shouldn't look at losing money on a car. You should look at it as though you paid __ amount of money to own/use __ item. Sure if you don't drive a vehicle much you can buy a new vehicle and keep it for 12-15 years. But who the fukk wants do drive the same vehicle for that long?

You keep saying debted to a car like its some massive amount of money you have to slave away for. Assuming the average monthly note is in the $300-500 range. For some people that is an inconsequential amount of money.

After my living expenses, savings, investments and retirements are taken out I also have $460.00 budgeted per month towards a vehicle note. No matter what I'll be subtracting a minimum of $460.00 per month specifically for that purpose. Leasing makes perfect sense for someone like me. If I decide to pay off and keep my truck I'll most likely lease a second 'fun' vehicle. Or get a second MC.

Hmmm got my brand new Sierra for $350 per month for 36 months and can go get a new Denali when this one is up or pay $750 a month for 5 years and own a clunker with 100,000 miles on it once it’s paid off in full. Yea that’s a real tough decision there OP. One day maybe you’ll have a decent job where you can afford to lock in 3 years of easy payments and have a nice car too.

I'd buy a $6k car and invest the extra $14-$24k. Also id continue investing the $100/month I'm saving on insurance over the life of my cash-bought car... Not to mention cheaper tires, lower maintenance costs, lower registration fees, lower taxes, etc etc etc

1. A lot of miscers don't understand what a depreciating asset is.
2. A lot of miscers are in a financial position that they worry about where $400/month goes

My car is paid for. But IDGAF about cars. Not at all. If my car broke down tomorrow, I would go lease something. Wouldn't even fix it. I have the cash to go buy a car outright. But why? Here, take my $50K right now and turn it into $25K in two years.

vs.

$500/month on a lease over the course of 3 years = $18k

Now what do you think will make my money work the best for me...keeping that $50K invested or spending it on something that loses value by the hour?

Misc is full of smarts today.

Pay cash for a decent car and use that $300-$600 per month you would have used for the payment and invest it??

I agree leasing is dumb but so is financing over 36 months. Best is to just buy a used car from auction, keep it for 2 years, sell it and repeat.

Paying up front cash for a car these days is absolutely pathetic and feeble minded.

Today in the UK, the MOT laws have become so strict that if your car even emits the tiniest bit of smoke from the exhaust, then it fails.

BRB buying new engine on £300 car.

It's much more astute to hire-purchase or even indefinitely least a car so that it is changed before the manufacturers warranty expires.

These days it costs less to lease/hp a car than it does to catch a bus.
