How about leasing an electric car? I wanna try one, but don't really wanna buy one for keeps.

No, I mean I want to help the environment and get an electric car for localized shopping and going to work (I work 3 miles from my home). I live in a small town and realistically can get around with an electric. My boss, who makes 200k+ leases one.

You don't realize that you're basically burning coal when you drive an electric vehicle?

imo the best value is a CPO warranty after like 20k where the warranty last to 80k. you can get a new(ish) car, and not lose a ton on depreciation. typically dealers or local credit unions will give you a low interest rate as well, assuming you have good credit

so let's like 0.9 - 2.09% APR on a 20k vehicle for lets say 5 years? your interest over the life of the loan won't be a terrible amount

this

I have a similar rate on a ten thousand dollar car. The interest is peanuts. Which I will gladly pay for the extra cash on hand for some upcoming expenses atm.

This. I was always under the impression that leasing was stupid by misinformed friends and family. So I went with the financing and buying a car. 6 years later I wish I just leased now knowing what I know. People who rip on leasing have no idea wtf they are talking about.

Buy used. I got my subaru for $1,200 from an auction in Wisconsin. $1000 to tow it to NorCal. Replaced the bumper, fenders, Radiator/Ac Condenser, and hood. Cost me ~$5000 after parts, paint, repairs, registration and all fees.

2011 Subaru Impreza 2.5i premium, 76,000 miles

Perfect for my lifestyle.

Cash for program car with a few k miles and already takes its depreciation.

0% financing cool too, but that 30% depreciation for driving it off the lot is ass.

Lease solid option if you have it in your monthly budget. Reliable updates transportation with 0 unseen cost.

For poor people yes it is. Every car, unless it is a one-off exotic will depreciate. Most rich people I know lease that way they don't tie their money away in depreciating assets. It makes no difference at the end of the day.

One simple example:

Mercedes-Benz S550 129,000$ loaded. In 3 years it will be worth less than half that. Say I purchased one new for 129,000$ and sold it 3 years later for 60 grand. If I leased it for 2000$/month with zero down thats 72 grand in payments. More or less that same as if I bought the car in the first place.

If you are an enthusiast - leasing is perfect. If you are an A to B guy with no money then get yourself a cheap reliable car that doesn't depreciate much (Toyota/Lexus) and keep it until the wheels fall off.

Now - say I wanted a 3 year old used Luxury car. Most of them of are maintenance pits so money in maintaining the vehicle will significantly increase the cost of ownership of the vehicle.

Rich people go through expensive cars yearly usually or at the maximum every 2-3 years. For them it might be better to lease as it saves the burden of having to wait to sell, market changes, and moving large amounts of assets around.

Pretty sure the misc is the only place on the internet where I've ever seen leasing being called a "good financial option."

It's always a badfinancialoption for an individual to lease (this is barring playing with taxes).

Is it a good option for other reasons? Sure. Everyone always throws out "I like new cars" and stuff like that. Financial is only one aspect of the car lease, but it's always a bad one.
