Against untrained people boxing or Muay Thai for a couple years and youre coming out way ahead for the most part

Once you get into trained people then all of the variables come into play - how do you handle the pressure, can you take a hard shot in the face, what’s the weight difference, skill difference in the different disciplines, etc

Street fights are stupid though. Brb risking manslaughter charges or getting caught with a helicopter swing and going head first into concrete for your precious ego and man status.

No, I hadn't even dated him. He had previously assaulted me walking home from high school before that. It was silly, and I let that go. But then, he followed me and came at me again.

This was not uncommon in my school. A lot of horny alpha boyos, not psychos!! Big distinction.

Street fighting is a good way to get crippled or jailed for life too. Humans aren't really good at hitting their head on the ground.

Size, strength, fearlessness, low inhibition and the ability to throw and take a punch/get hurt are more important than anything else unless you're facing a seasoned fighter with a lot of fighting/heavy sparring experience. But there aren't many men like that, especially in the west.

As others have said, Muay Thai is the best due to having more weapons at your disposal. Shyt if you can kick decently, a leg kick to someone who's never eaten a kick, will cause a high percentage of people to at least second guess proceeding with the fight or give up outright. Add in the clinch and a proper plume(sp?) grip and you're in control of the entire fight. A 1-2, clinch, drop step, knee to the face will put 99% of people you encounter in street fights out.

Muay Thai has two disadvantages over boxing though:
1) It takes longer to get decent at.
2) Due to smaller rings, a larger arsenal and a narrower stance, it doesn't focus on movement as much. Boxing makes it easier to keep the distance when faced with multiple agressors or to disengage and retreat than Muay Thai does.

But in the end all full contact striking arts are awesome.

Ideally you should know both, but you always have a "puncher's chance" on the feet, even if you don't have any training and the other guy does. If you get on the ground with someone who has 6 months of training, you're in water without knowing how to swim. Also, BJJ principles and many submissions/etc can be used while standing. Good luck boxing off your back

A lot of guys itt are saying boxing > kickboxing on the street. Not necessarily. While you can elbow/knee up close, the last thing you'd want as a kickboxer is for some legit boxer to be too close for kicking range and lighting you up with hands and head movement. You're also taking a risk every time you're only on one foot in a fight.

Lol at some people hating on bjj for street fights.. You're obviously not going to fuking pull guard when you're standing but since most fights end up on the ground it will be so easy for a trained grappler to get the advantage there.. Having said that I do think muay thai/kickboxing is the best for streetfights.
Maintain distance, less contact more damage than grappling, better if there are wild cards like more people behind you or if they have a weapon (can run away easier).

I always feel bodytype and size is an underrated factor here.
Some lanky weak guy will do good with striking even with minimal training.
A big strong dude can ragdoll people in a grapple and simply sit on them even if he is just a white belt.
A small weak guy IMO needs more experience to beat a stronger bigger aggressor in a grapple than to school him with punches and footwork.

Combat sambo is probably the best since it was designed specially for hand to hand combat.

I'd say a combination of Boxing/Muay Thai and wrestling (not wwe chit).

Would not want to end up on the ground though during a street fight. 1st class ticket to getting your head stomped in if the guy has friends. (they will jump in and help him).

Yes, size and strength matter significantly. Physics is physics.

There's tons of variables to consider, of course, but being able to control where the fight goes is the most important for me after all the obvious ones (mindset, for example). Size and strength def impacts that hugely.

Who is going to be better in a better position for eye gouging and ball grabbing? The guy, who controls the pace on the ground or the guy, who gets controlled and is totally out of his element?

i think wrestling/whatever involves groundwork, and kickboxing

i do kickboxing and it's definitely taught me the fundamentals. i've been in a lot of street fights in my late teens, so i can sort of compare myself as someone who didn't know **** about fighting vs myself now who's learned combat.

dude is right all street fights i've been in end up on the ground fast. like i'd say actual striking is way less than a minute then it's like pulling and grabbing and someone loses balance and falls or both people do

wrestling i think is the most useful for street fights... kickboxing teaches you range, movement, maintaining distance, how to strike correctly, reflexes, but you're not fighting in an open ring in a street fight. it could be a corridor, or a rocky pavement, or surrounded by furniture. like imagining myself fighting just inside my tiny kitchen, i wouldn't really be able to utilize everything i've practiced

I 100% agree with the above.

I've experienced it myself.

I used to work security and if someone outweighed by a stone (12lbs) or so, I could handle them OK using learned on the job grappling. (You pick up things, when you've had to restrain a couple dozen people.)

However, I can never forget one time I got into a grappling situation with a dude who as a good 4 inches taller than me, almost double my weight (no BS). The dude literally just purposefully fell forward on me with his belly. I couldn't do chit, but make it difficult for him to try to get up until help arrived. Ded srs.

Size matters a lot less when it comes to grappling, in comparison to striking. You better be a BJJ/Judo Black Belt or have the equivalent skill in wrestling, to effectively deal with dudes who are double your size in grappling.

The Mountain would destroy Connor Mcgregor in a real MMA match, I'd bet 1K on it.

Some cardio training, he would be fine. He only playfully grabbed Connor in 17 seconds, if he was going full power Connor would be thrown around like a ragdoll.

Do you remember Bob Sapp?

When he started (and was in his prime, regarding his career, which was 2002 to 2005) only a few fighters could beat him (aside from the DQ losses). Dude only had size, strength, and toughness. But he used to phuck people up with the skill equivalent of 6 weeks of training.

If you've watched Bob's fights. He would be tired, drop his hands and take huge breaths in the middle of fights. But then he would just become aggressive again, and phuck people up. Everyone thought the same thing Skill > Power and size... "He'll get tired"... When people are tough minded, they can work through that. The Mountain is not a weak minded person.

In all seriousness, boxing/kickboxing and judo/bjj imo...or sambo or wrestling etc...

Maybe kyokushin karate or Wing Chun but they're so rare...krav maga. I don't think your typical karate and tkd practice would be all that great, but they aren't really meant for street fighting. They're family fitness and lifelong activity/martial arts enjoyment asartand fitness.

I wouldn't recommend anyone ever streetfight. Even if well trained. For example, a guy in my area who was bjj and kickboxing I think put out a guy's eye in a bar fight...and went to jail, despite it being quite arguable if it was his fault to be in that fight.

The legal system might not look at it your way at all.

Boxing and wrestling. So many injuries I see happen in wrestling classes so I decided not to take it. If I fight an amateur wrestler on the street, I'm fked.

Boxing I can do though...dodging punches is the only way for us manlets to get in range.

In my second grappling competition I had to fight a guy, that was morbidly obese. Dude had already lost a lot of weights(congrats on his amazing journey), but he still had weighted in at 360lbs @ 5'10(I was 6' 230). I was actually stronger and could shove him around, but I failed to take him down. He didn't do anything, but without punches and special skills Ididn't accomplish much either. Aside of locking up and shoving him like an old WWE match from the 1980s.
I finally said f*ck it and pulled guard...big mistake. He fell onto me and I couldn't close my guard. I tried to sweep only to realize, that hip movement works completely different against such a giant belly. I could move hips inside his blubber no problem, but it wouldn't move him at all. Not just because of his weight, also mostly because I would just leave imprints on his belly but I didn't see no real way for pressure to reach his pelvis.
I tried a guillotine - couldn't reach around him. He tried some arm triangle, but I was way stronger and his technique bad. He than focussed on lying flat. We got a break and the match went overtime. The score was still 0:0 and I was totally embarassed for not accomplishing much.
Overtime begins. I pull guard again. This time I grab his tubby arm and try a kimura. Fail to reach around his giant torso, but still manage to pull his arm in some poverty one-armed-kimura position. Even with that one arm gone I still cannot sweep him. Finally I get my other arm in position, but shortly before I could finish the submission the bell rings. I still get the win being the one guy, who actually did something.
But I never felt so embarassed after a match.

I would agree, if he gets a couple of weeks to learn how to bumrush McGregor. Otherwise I think Connor still has ways to beat him. Many people flinch, if struck and without knowing how to brace vs leg kicks those will hurt and might keep him from doing much.
He doesn't have that much time to pull of said tactic. He gassed insanely fast he did some boxing with Eddie Hall for fun.

If you're interested in trying it out or training maybe try Gracie Jiu-jitsu in Raleigh. Royce is real good, and the guys really know what they're doing. I trained a little at their school but I'm doing mostly Judo now (well nothing atm because virus)...but went to a Royce seminar last year. He did a whole fight sequence with several options and submissions...it was good.

The school does a lot of self defence/bar fighting scenarios as well as your regular bjj stuff.

Bjj is pretty pricey, though...kind of an expensive way to workout but it's really a lot of fun.

Edit: Just an aside...the people aren't training for street fighting. Most people it's fitness and enjoyment imo. But of course there is a real martial aspect. And there's tournaments which are a lot of sporting fun, even as you get older. It's harder 40+, but plenty of guys are...

LOL!

I realized after my experience, that if the dude simply dropped some hammerfists, I would have been phucked.

Size and Strength matters a lot, anyone who says otherwise is in pure theory land, IMO.

I honestly think 12 weeks of conditioning, and sparring... The dude would massacre Connor. Even now, I would put my money The Mountain.

220lb+ BJJ black belt Anthony Smith couldn't submit 165lb former hs wrestler crackhead. BJJ is becoming like the karate McDojos if the past, everyone 'trains' and has a belt.:

Most people wash out before blue, and most people don't make it past blue afaik...it's not easy. Same with Judo. You have to do tournaments and get points. You can either do the throws...or not. You're not throwing the air.

I've dealt with somebody who seemed to be out of his mind on some drug.

Myself and 3 other people held him down, and the dude was still fighting until the police showed up. The dude (the police told me) fought them the whole time they put him in the car, and fought him when they put him in the cells.

Never underestimate the imperviousness to pain that some drugs can give people. Until you've experienced it first hand, it's really not as simple as "LOL, he couldn't' take out a 165lb wrestler on drugs!".

I knew a doorman who told me about the time that he and another colleague were beating the **** out of a guy, who kept bouncing back like a zombie, because he was out of his mind on some drug. They finally just had to throw the dude out, and lock the door. He said at one point he restrained the dude, and told his bodybuilding mate to punch him... The dude still didn't go down.
