What a nice visual you've painted with your words. That sums up the scene I was trying to create quite nicely actually.

Im from Canada too, and it brings me back to the cold early mornings steeped in twilight, with blowing snow and freshly frosted trees. I love it.

I really want to learn how to paint, so far I only do drawing (aside from a few paintings of fish and clouds lol). What did you start off with when you learned? Did you focus on any techniques?

I dont even know which brushes I should get for starting off. Flat...round...fanned? Size? And recommendations?
I know these feels very well. Where in Canada are you? In Quebec, the winters are pretty intense. Seriously, it's winter half the year here, no joke. November - April. There's snow in some capacity on the ground for 6 months.

As to how I started - I bought myself something called the Bob Ross master paint kit. I got it used on Ebay for around 80 bucks, but it was unopened. Google it, you'll see it comes with all the initial brushes you'll need, small tubes of necessary paints, a painting knife, and a dvd of the episode of The Joy of Painting you can paint along with and create. That's a really nice start. From there, I would just pick episodes of The Joy of Painting that I wanted to try and create. Even to this day my list is never-ending. I haven't even made a dent. The way I learned was just to paint along with Bob once a week. I'd recommend you watch a bunch of episodes to get the 'theoretical' grounding for this painting style (wet on wet). For a year prior, I was watching The Joy of Painting every night just before bed because it seriously put me to sleep immediately. So, inadvertently, I learned a lot just by watching.

As for brushes, if you want to paint in this style, I would recommend you stick with Bob's brushes at first. It's not necessary that you buy the Ross brand of paints. They're pretty expensive because of the brand name associated. You do want a really firm, dry oil paint, though. Thin sticks to thick, so your under layers have to be thick, or else you'll just end up, as Bob called it, 'mixing mud.'

Please feel free to post any other questions ITT or PM me if you have any other questions. If you have even the slightest desire in your heart to paint, I would urge to to pursue it in some capacity. We're held back by beliefs that we may not succeed, but use what I've been able to do as proof that you absolutely CAN do this. Seriously, less than 2 years ago I had never painted in my life.

Same. I had always done it this way. Much like Bob, I don't like a human presence in my paintings, but I did paint this one for charity, and I wanted to increase the quaintness of it. I thought the image of a little cabin warmed by a wood fire would add to the overall feeling in the painting. It's cold outside, it's snowing, but you're cooped up in your warm little cabin.

When I was done the painting, what I did was use "liquid white," which is basically a really thin titanium white oil paint. I dipped the tips of the bristles of a fan brush in this thin paint, I laid the canvas down flat on a table, stood above it, and 'flicked' the bristles of the fan brush against my palette knife, sending a 'spray' of liquid white onto my canvas. I almost didn't do it. I had to fight through thoughts that I'd ruin my painting, but I'm glad I did it. I've done this before to add the illusion of stars in a night sky. The trick is to not put too much paint on your fan brush so that you don't send large globules of paint onto your canvas. A tiny bit at a time. You can always add more, and I was going for the illusion of a very light, serene snowfall happening, not so much a blizzard.

Been wanting to give painting a go myself. I'm a fan on the landscape type paintings like Bob ross and The Group of Seven.

You can do it if you put your mind to it, as cliche as that sounds. That's how I learned with zero a priori art skills. Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised.
