This. Rats can spread other things like hantavirus which is just some feverish symptoms, but this is usually wild rats and is contracted from aerosol contact with infected nests.

Sorry, I should've been more specific. In terms of spread, it can be spread through the ways you listed, but the primary route of transmission is aerosol from disturbing a nest containing those fluids.

In terms of fatalities, I was more referring to old world hantavirus disease. New world or the pulmonary component has a significant rate of fatality but the disease overall is rare. Febrile illness is the number one reported "symptom", as far as a subset of symptoms could be considered a single symptom.

My point was that rats are responsible for some zoonoses but not really bubonic plague, unless you blame them for being benign reservoirs in which case you need to blame them for borreliosis as well.

In the almost 7 years ive worked at petco. The only time weve sold fancy rats is because they accidently came with the batch of regular feeder rats. And the dumbass running the animal department didnt have the heart to sell them as feeders.

Yeah except hamsters suck. This is like a 1 in a billion situation. I had my rat for a long time and it was fine. I wouldn't hesitate if my child wanted a rat. Also had a sugar glider which was an amazing pet and I had pet mice which were a nightmare cause they didn't stop having babies.

Now I have a dog and it's like having a freaking kid.

Had one as a kid that would sit on my shoulder when I road my bike, even snuck him into school one day.
Tucked my shirt into my pants and let him hang out in the shirt
I've probably had 10-15 throughout my life
Outside of an inbred lookin one, all were fantastic pets
Smart, cheap, only live a couple of years

Hamsters, mice, and gerbils are pretty dumb and are prone to biting

can't sue after signing the waiver and ignoring the risk. Bad parent's are bad, the parent's should face jail time for doing something they knew would kill there kid.

This was like a 1/100,000,000 chance though.

-Kids die from getting hit by a car while riding their bikes
-Getting a brain-eating parasite by drinking from a water fountain
-Dying of a heat stroke playing sports
-Concussions/brain injury from sports
-Drowning while swimming

Would you say the parents were horrible if their kid died from any of the causes above?

We take calculated risks every day. The risks of dying from a pet rat were so extremely low I'm sure they didn't feel they were putting their kid in any danger.
Neither does Petco or any other store, otherwise they wouldn't sell them at all.
I agree that they signed a waiver and they shouldn't sue, but wouldn't that be your knee jerk reaction? They are greiving and want to place the blame on someone/ something even though it's really no one's fault.

It was just bad luck.
