I'd like to be proven wrong, but for the time being I'm leaning towards we're not as special as we think we are.

2) The likelihood of life in this universe is overwhelmingly likely, not the other way around. Scientists only state that it's highly unlikely that theuniverse itselfhas the laws of physics required to support the spontaneous occurrence of life. Proof of God? Maybe. Doesn't mean aliens are not part of his menagerie though. Scientists like to cope with this fact by inventing 'multiverse theory'.
1. i never said we are the only life in the universe. i don't know. my point is that this argument for the existence of aliens is nonsense. maybe the issue here is that you're thinking from the perspective of someone who believes in, or leans towards the possibility of, a creator; therefore you imagine life to be inevitable. but even without the concept of an entity who created life, it's just how our brains work - you can't comprehend the end of your consciousness and, on a lesser level, we take our existence as evidence that life is the natural state of affairs, that we exist because wemust.

we aren't some perfect being - if 'god' created us in his image, he has some serious issues, he's a sadomasochistic or he simply has shoddy handiwork. we, along with all life on earth, are just a fluke. we've dug ourselves into a serious hole by attempting to paint ourselves as special and above other forms of life, which leads to difficulty in these existential searches.

2. please explain to me why 'the likelihood of life in this universe is overwhelmingly likely', without basing it on the fact that life on earth exists.

have you looked into the sequence of events that led to us being here, starting with the first organic compounds, theories of how DNA and RNA came into existence, when one of 'em happened to be in the same place as lipid membranes to become the first cell, how organelles started working together, how cyanobacteria started pumping out oxygen and, after a whole bunch of oxidation, enough built up over a couple of billion years to create an ozone layer, allowing more advanced life to develop? and that's just scratching the surface of the incredibly long sequence of incredibly improbable events that occurred to allow us to be here today.

just because something happened doesn't mean it's likely.

these alien threads get more heat than the islam vs. christianity debate. funny how nobody knows the truth but everyone is so passionate about their side lmao.

Anyway, article says this: The average time a species exists from origin to extinction is one million years on Earth.

Where does that data arrive from? Curious how they compute 1 million years is the average.

there are only so many components needed for life.
We don't really know whether it's likely or not, because we've only observed abiogenesis occuring once. Maybe it's common; maybe it's not. We don't know.

It's true that our galaxy is vast (let's leave the universe out of it, as intergalactic travel is probably not feasible), but if the odds of abiogenesis are sufficiently low (less than 1 in 60 billion, which is a good estimate for the total number of habitable planets in the galaxy), then life elsewhere is not likely. There are also other bottlenecks facing intellegent life (setting aside abiogenesis). For instance, we've only ever witnessed one instance of the prokaryote --> eukaryote transition.

plz show estimate for 60B = # of habitable planets

new evidence is showing that life is possible on moons too - and there are far, FAR more of those than planets. hell we're wondering if life exists in the warm, massive, saltwater oceans on several moons in our very own solar system

IMO, his argument is wrong. Life is possible in other place, but it's notprobable. Given our current evidence (or lack thereof), it looks like we can conclude that no life exists besides us.

Just because something is possible =/= actually going to happen.

Oftentimes, things work out theoretically, but fail to work experimentally.

You stated that wormholes don't exist. Not that they might not. But don't. The proof is on you as much as it is me pal. Just because we have no evidence does not mean they don't exist. Why limit your imagination to only what you can see in front of you? Must be such a crippling mindset. Use your brain and realize we cannot know everything. It's perfectly reasonable to ponder that there are alien intelligences out there that are unimaginably advanced.

What if God just created the universe, and made the laws within it capable of supporting life, and then just sat back and chilled/watched it evolve? Either way, why is speculating on whether or not alien life exists in the universe is nonsense? Would it have been nonsense if Native Americans would have wondered about strange white people invading their homelands?

2) The likelihood is overwhelmingly likely because there are billions of earth-like planets in the universe. There is no question some could support life. So either we are the first (mind blowingly unlikely) or we have neighbours.

Aliens are already here. Their unmanned craft are here at the very least. If you disagree, you simply haven't seen the evidence. And I don't mean crappy youtube videos made by stoners and the mentally ill. There is legitimate evidence which proves they are here, deal with it.

Your whole assumption is that these ancient civilizations must have witnessed these "god-like" entities and that is how religion was born. Nobody said anything about certain ancient civilizations acquiring scientific knowledge either. However, this isn't to say that they weren't largely ignorant from a scientific perspective as compared to modern times and look to divine beings to seek explanation.

again, have you factored into your delicate equation how unlikely it is that life exists here in the first place?

man, you're the one who won't stop bringing up "god". obviously, this is another discussion entirely, but why are you reaching so hard with the god chit? every few decades "god" gets abstracted a step further. the way you're using "god" is just as a way of saying "something i don't understand". you have a very common problem - you're incapable of saying "i don't know". instead of injecting this "god" garbage into an argument or a system of belief every time there's a gap in your understanding/the science, how about you just pull the stick out of your arse and say "i don't know"?

i never said speculating on the existence of alien life is nonsense. you're not following me here. i said that particular argument for the existence of aliens is nonsense.

and you clearly aren't able to grasp the point here - you don't seem to be able to understand that "life" isn't just some "on" switch. i would ask you to explain why it's "mind blowingly unlikely" that we're the first life in the universe but, given how things have been going, you'd just say "there's life on earth and there are many planets similar to earth" a few more times.

well, galileo's belief that the earth revolved around the sun was based on his observations of planetary bodies in our solar system with a telescope.

your belief that there must be aliens is based on "it's possible".

man, you're the one who won't stop bringing up "god". obviously, this is another discussion entirely, but why are you reaching so hard with the god chit? every few decades "god" gets abstracted a step further. the way you're using "god" is just as a way of saying "something i don't understand". you have a very common problem - you're incapable of saying "i don't know". instead of injecting this "god" garbage into an argument or a system of belief every time there's a gap in your understanding/the science, how about you just pull the stick out of your arse and say "i don't know"?

i never said speculating on the existence of alien life is nonsense. you're not following me here. i said that particular argument for the existence of aliens is nonsense.

and you clearly aren't able to grasp the point here - you don't seem to be able to understand that "life" isn't just some "on" switch. i would ask you to explain why it's "mind blowingly unlikely" that we're the first life in the universe but, given how things have been going, you'd just say "there's life on earth and there are many planets similar to earth" a few more times.

well, galileo's belief that the earth revolved around the sun was based on his observations of planetary bodies in our solar system with a telescope.

your belief that there must be aliens is based on "it's possible".
This entire post is just guff.

I'll make it simple for you:

1) Either we are the first
2) Or not

It really is that simple.

One is far more unlikely than the other (1), but I guess 2 is still possible.

And your theory about "it's too difficult for life to appear anywhere else that might be earthlike" is pulled directly out of your anus. Completely and utterly straight from your bowel.
