They started out in the Ukraine, and spread through to Eastern and Southern Europe only 1000 years or so ago.
That is probably true, but many white "slavic" russians also originate from the baltic area, belarus, and have finnish/baltic DNA. The rus empire was heavy in modern day belarus and they advanced south east to the khazar empire and to modern day ukraine.
