You can hope for some silly ass revolt, but I'll sleep well tonight knowing there is no way that the 2-3% of idiots unhappy with their lot in life could never overcome the military, police, and armed citizens who will protect the liberties of our constitution and way of life.

I think it's fuked up that kids are raised in poverty because their parents screwed up and people would rather have a couple more toys now then raise a function generation to follow them and develop a happier society/better economy and get their toys down the road.

I believe in death taxes because Waltons kids didn't do chit and--as dubious as the argument that anyone should have billions--they even more clearly have no moral argument to possess that kind of wealth. I don't think there is a good non-moralistic, efficiency type argument for letting them retain most of the billions inherited as they weren't insightful and prudent enough to build the empire (which, if they did, might suggest they could intelligently reinvesting that capital).
Based on this post alone we're basically on the same page - you're good to debate with. Regarding the kid and wealth thing, I always scratch my head on that.

Like I said, I'm a dropout, grew up in painful poverty single parent home with all the issues that come with it but made it out. I'll have wealth to pass down. I HOPE I can find ways to make them appreciate it but who knows. I still feel it's my right to be able to help my future generations out, like the other poster, a death tax might make sense for insanely large sums like $50+mil, then I'd agree.

What really could change the world is just education. We need a speaker who can speak to the masses about saving, investing, living frugally, understanding each other, spreading less hate, how to avoid the hate-inciting for profit media companies (CNN, MSN, Fox) and much more. I really hope some point in my life I can be that speaker.

Yes, I think they need to be taxed a bit more but the media has tricked people into thinking they are evil. You can easily tell who falls for stuff easily and who doesn't in this thread.
Yeah but it is hard to blame him when he probably has no idea how economics works or what these guys actually do which is why I try to stick to posting facts and try to suppress the biting sarcasm I usually employ. It is probably akin to someone telling me what inner city life is like for those who are stuck there. It is as easy for him to see a bunch of rich fat white dudes sitting on their ass doing nothing and making a couple million a day as it is for some of the idiots on the misc to say inner city people are all lazy welfare abusers.

Your hearts in the right place brah and I agree things are screwed up. My $0.02, be careful who you spread your hatred and anger to though, don't let the media trick you into thinking someone is automatically the evil guy because of their skin color or net worth. Carefully decide who to be mad at, and calmly present safe options vs promoting a revolt.

That's how we get better. Educate people, even if it's just a forum on the internet. Help yourself, work hard, save, invest, and help your friends, and spread the word that's all you can do.

Only thing I would say to that is we have to keep a manageable population. There is no way to sustain a decent way of life when our population is exploding and we are forced to fight for resources. There is absolutely no way we could get enough houses(american standard) for 6 billion people and feed them all as well as an average American family.

All right fine, the issues are in different areas and it is complex but in the end, the result is that the income gap is at a unprecedented mark because its on the fuking global scale, dude.

I'm not tricked by the media, I'm just on the internet a little bit too much. If I wasn't on it and I was outside, I wouldn't notice how less than 10 people owned more than the 50% of the world's wealth.

Overall, most of the 8 guys in the OP are actually very positive people for the life and human advancement in general. They advanced our innovation by huge leaps, advanced our communication, advanced economies and drove business lifting tens of millions out of poverty around the globe, and will end up donating massive amounts of their wealth to good causes moving humans along the line.

The people slowing the process of overall human greatness are the politicians of corrupt failed states. Also, the people in those countries not forcing a better government. European countries have done it, it can be repeated. Thankfully, some countries are following, just not all and not fast enough. Economies are growing, these 8 guys are huge contributors for the human race. I think most of your anger should be somewhere else.

Also like I said a few pages ago, stats can be deceiving. I don't know you, but I can almost bet you have more wealth than the bottom 500 million people combined just assuming you're the average guy in the US or parts of Europe. Does that mean you're extremely greedy?

No.

Does that mean I should divide up your wealth and give back to those 500 million people?

No.

There is just a lot of poverty in the world that is unsolvable, and 7+ billion people on Earth, so stats like that are unavoidable until governments around the world create better opportunities for local economies and better laws.

I guess I did have the energy for a debate tonight.
I completely agree with you that the governments and politicians that have created the landscape for these things to happen are mostly to blame but I dont think that pardons the people that have exploited them.

Its not anyones duty to try and help the poor and disenfranchised but if you are going to a povert country to set up shop and have every means at your disposal to make real positive changes and make the decision not too so you can profit 1.3 billion instead 1.1 billion for the quarter then you are a piece of chit. Period.

To the guy talking about how sweatshops are better than the alternative for these people that doesnt make it ok to go and open them and pay them as little as possible when you do not have too...and they 100% are capable of improving working conditions which is evidenced by the 100 properties and private planes their owners have.

And yes in many cases people in poor working conditions in 3rd world countries are being forced to work in them what kind of bubble are you living in?

I agree. The biggest issue these days is the media, they realized they can make money off of anger. I'm changing topics but truly, I hate CNN with a passion and I think they are doing more to divide the country and create poverty/lack of understanding and anger for hundreds of millions in the US than almost anyone right now.

Fox was always known as biased, so it doesn't surprise anybody when they write a biased article, although they are far less biased these days.

CNN was always neutral and gained a huge following from prior quality news reporting, but it's now far worse than Fox ever was, in my eyes it's one of the real reasons for the issues we have. MSN isn't far behind. Buzzfeed shouldn't even be mentioned. THEY are far, far, far worse than these 8 innovators.

Well you're a smart dude man, and we all should be angry, so much of my family is still in poverty it hurts. We just have to guide our anger the right way. Good stuff.

Ha its a complex topic bruh. Hypothetically 8 people have as much "wealth" as 50% of the population. In real terms we both know it isn't exactly true, but the divide is growing which I would attribute to a lack of wage growth. Unfortunately the only times we have experiences across the board wage growth is during the world wars(shocker big population drops)... so pick your poison.

Just to give you a bit of perspective... are you posting this from a Windows computer?

How about an Apple computer?

Ironic, huh? Do you have an iPhone? Android? Anything from Nike? Samsung TV or Sony or any major brand monitor?

You can't pretend to be on a moral high ground if you're posting online and a modern human in a developed country. We're just as guilty. On top of that, these 8 innovators and their usage of low wage labor is exaggerated by their post. Most of these companies are trying very hard to avoid those slave labor production laws to avoid tainting their image. They did more to raise more people out of the poverty line than put people in. Their innovations and innovating triggering platforms have connected us and grown economies in extreme ways. They are good for the human race overall.

Again, your anger is right to have, I just think you're pointing your finger slightly in the wrong direction.

Your ideology depends on reality being a product of it. Reality is the current position exists so any actions need to form with it in mind.

Every country with varying levels of economical success and governing styles has failed to prevent it so to claim they need to do better somehow without change is illogical.

To claim the 8 people in the OP are doing good for society is to claim the ends justify the means. Which all events in history from the beginning of time have proven isnt true.

You really need to think for yourself. Forget what youre told and use basic logic.

I think it has been said numerous times that there needs to be some change... The main argument being presented is you cannot be mad at successful people for being successful and having people throw their money at them.

I think I could say the same for you, you're overall the one being called out in this thread for poor logic. I'm not going to get personal here but I think you're incorrect, go read my posts and what others are telling you in this thread one more time. Overall, they aren't the perpetrators you think they are. On top of that, you aren't really making any significant argument here worth debating. You have to assume and expect humans are going to use the means available to them for their innovation needs, and I describe in my last post above what I think they are doing to combat it as larger corporations now.

While they aren't 100% innocent (like any of us, or you using the internet and some device) the majority of the fault lies within the failed governments allowing slave labor where this still exists. I just suggest reading the last few pages again.

ITT people try to hold on to the notion that the world is ultimately fair---it's not.

Some people earned their wealth. Some people exploited others to make a fortune. Some people inherited it.

The argument that if you use the product you are as big a part of the problem is innacurate, contributing .00000000000000000001% of their income is not comparable to being in control of the company making the decisions to take advantage of the poor.

My anger is not directed at tech billionaires it is directed at the old money families (and religious groups) that actually control the world and are the real cause of all the horrors that go on in this world but I did not bring it up as I wanted to avoid turning this into a conspiracy debate.

I dont believe everyone in 1st world countries are evil and should live in poverty because of the situation of others thats not my point.

My whole point is that these people are not just smarter and harder working than everyone else and a huge amount of their success can be attributed to circumstances beyond their control and being in situations that other people will never have the option to be in. When you are in that position you have great power to help or harm and people that are lucky enough to be in that position or be smart enough (intelligence is another random factor people dont choose to be born smart ir stupid) to make a positive difference but instead choose to impose their will on others and take advantage of people that never had the opportunites they did are absolute scum. For the record I do not think Bill Gates is scum.

There is absolutely no denying the havoc corporations (especially resource based and mining) have reaped on 3rd world civilizations.
One day scientists are going to kill us all.

Came in to point out how misleading these kinds of stats are. Not sure if the other 100+ posts pointed this out:

The issue with OP's statement is how "wealth" is defined. If it's the grand sum of assets and debts....then the vast majority of people you know have negative wealth, due to student loans, car loans, and mortgages. So if you give a homeless man, with a wealth of exactly zero (no assets, no debt) a single $1 dollar bill, then statistically he's got more wealth than like 50% of the planet, including all of those people living in mcmansions. Statistics about the "X number of people with more wealth than Y%" are only designed to manipulate "useful idiots."

When you're that wealthy you can't stop earning money. Just having that much in assets and cash will earn you a huge sum a year in interest and equity growth. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet aim to give away over 90% of their accumulated wealth to charity because they just don't need it and can't stop it rolling in.

You're dumb as **** if you think that they have that amount in their bank accounts. That's what they're worth, not what they have. They will never ever be able to liquefy all of that into actual cash. Its just a value that comes with having such valuable companies

I just don't understand the point though. You see all these ancient men with billions in the bank. They are nearing death yet are still excited by money. Do they knew something we don't?

They dont have billions in the bank, they own a large portion of giant companies which many of them started. Are they supposed to give up their shares in the companies they own? Most of the people on that list take little to no salary and have pledge to give 95%+ of their wealth to charity.

THere not anything holding them to this technically but Buffet and Gates are the two biggest philanthropists on the planet

that's life.

these people do amazing things with their money. They give back not only for present humans, but for the future as well. Nothing in life is fair. Some kids are born and die of aggressive cancer at 3 years of age. Some people live to be 130 years old. Some people are born good looking, some are born horrifically ugly and disfigured. Some people hit the jackpot and create a product (like Microsoft) that became part of daily life and now are stupidly rich. Bill Gates has literally changed the world with his money. Everything from building schools in impoverished countries, to environmental technologies that put drinking water in African villages at the fraction of cost that traditional methods would bring. His foundation has hands everywhere in the world and people should be thankful there are super rich people like Bill Gates on this planet.

Why are you mad?
