The weakest point is probably its legs. Id imagine a strong male could probably crack one of those things in half like a stick given enough strength. Youd have to grab the leg at the lowest spot close to the ankle and just try and twist that thing and crack it in half. Of course the dog gonna be mawling one of your arms but this a one hand job.
Hopefully the pain of a broken bone would be enough to unclench the jaw. I doubt your gonna beat its head in right cause its gonna be shaking you like an alligator and their skulls are hard as rock SRS. Best bet is the eyes or break its legs. Once the legs broken it cant stand and loses leverage.

It simply kept lunging in every so often at my leg as we faced off.
I guess your average family pitbull isn't trained or smart enough to come in leaping up at your arms/neck.

Maybe Ive done too much bite work with MWD's, but half of yall are out of your mind.
Short answer: shoot it.
I like how dudes in here act like they will have all this time to take their shirt/jacket off and "wrap it around their arm".
A dog in a real rage will close so fast and trying to "kick it" in the head while its lunging full speed at you does nothing other than:
-completely whiff, hence opening up your man parts for lunch
-strike it and barely slow it down, especially a pit with thick skull.
All you can do is expect to get torn up and bloodied, but use your body weight/pin it down knee him in the side/stomach, try chokes, and go from there.
Either way you're in for a bad day.

Grab it by the tail, swing it round above my head and throw it over the nearest house.

You underestimate the speed of dogs running after a target. Go look at some runt running faster than even the likes of Usain Bolt could run and its just chasing a fukin ball or stick. You're gonna have to think real quick and react faster when you see the dog coming and then process whats happening. Most people freeze up because they're desk jockeys and their caveman hunter instinct is buried beneath whats on television and the internet.
So then you about to go down with the dog. LOL @ you kicking a dog as it runs full pelt at you and you run or kick full pelt. Bad idea because you're going to break your foot, ankle and leg in one go and possibly dislocate your hip. Try fighting a dog whilst being a cripple, you're dead meat.
You kick a dog in the sides if it isn't attacking you, never front on. Just LMFAO!
Other messy details - dogs can chew through your arms and legs like they chew through any toy or bone. Think that tasty bone marrow or your tattoos gonna stop those teeth? Nope.
Blood loss: nuff said.
If you want to tackle a dog 1 on 1 you need to get rid of its ability to bite you. Dogs are fukin useless without their mouths. They are not cats so just muzzle them or choke them with your legs and bodyweight.
Saying that, gun or knife works but who says you're gonna see the dog before it gets you?

Lol @ some of the responses here saying "id shoot it". Isn't the scenario assuming we are defending ourselves unarmed and without warning?

It lunged at me and stomped downwards with my boot knocking its head into the ground. It backed off snarling and would attempt more lunges with the same result.
I backed off slowly into my garage where I had a 6' length of PVC pipe. I started going after it with the pipe. It was leary of the PVC pipe, but wouldn't run off, just back up.
I eventually was able to herd into my backyard and locked it up in there.
Called the county sheriff who informed me they had no animal control officer. I was within my rights to defend myself, but if I shot it, make sure it died or I could face animal cruelty charges.
I kept it locked up until that evening when a lady came by looking for it. I mean mugged her and told her the story. She seemed embarrassed. The dog was happy to see her and wasn't aggressive at all towards me when she was there.

Once you have snapped the two front legs by pulling them apart it will die. Don't know how accurate this is and wouldn't like to try it but I really hope I never have to find out if it works or not.
I have never been in a fight with a pitbull, but I once had a skirmish with a mangy mutt (no, I am not talking about that insolent cur in the "expensive watch thread" with the Rolex Daytona) during my travels, while I was in Botswana. I defeated the dog, but at great loss: my custom Desmond Merrion slacks were ripped because I started my defense by kicking the dog. One of the locals informed me that the way to deal with a dog is to take off your belt and use it as a whip. So I suppose if a pitbull came at me, if I was fortunate to have a belt on, I would take it off and whip it. If the dog is in kill mode, however, I doubt that this would stop it. The only real solution is to have a gun on you. The final solution is to outlaw pitbulls.

My friend has a young pit about 75lbs and it tries to bite me all the time because I'm large and it doesn't have any chill, I can throw that one around like a toy and hold her mouth shut with one hand.
Pit bulls aren't all that tough when you're 3-4x their size, regularly carry around barrels/sandbags 2-3x their size & weight, and have a high tolerance for pain. Just take a couple bites/scratches and pin the bastard to the ground until it stops. If you can't, my question to you is, do you even lift?
If that doesn't work, and assuming this is an aggressive 120lb male, boot the bastard in it's nose as hard as you can and run; then call animal control from a location it can't bite you.

i would climb on top of the nearest car. hope to god it's a truck so i can jump in the back. i don't think the dog would be able to jump into the back of the truck. i sometimes wonder if i climbed on top of a regular car if it would be too slippery for the dog. or possibly try to get into someone's backyard and hope i can close the gate before the dog gets in.
i think about these situations because i go running around the neighborhood a lot and who knows what is lurking around where i am... seriously debating carrying a knife when i go running.... actually i think i will.
edit- just saw OP says no weapons
then i am dead

Unless it is a trained attack dog it will likely jump at me for the attack, which leaves it wide open for a strong kick or knee.
It is not so much the major events as the small day-to-day decisions that map the course of our living. . . Our lives are, in reality, the sum total of our seemingly unimportant decisions and of our capacity to live by those decisions. ― Gordon B. Hinckley

1. Shoot it if I have by pistol on me
2. If I dont, let it bite my left arm and gut it from below with my knife
2. If I dont have my gun or knife, let it bite my left arm, then reach underneath the dog with right arm and rip his testicles off
